Clark 'Clutch Pearlers' by Dylan Hayes
Promonews - 23rd Mar 2023
Dylan Hayes gets glitchy with nature, in his mesmerizing video for composer, electronic producer and performer Christopher Clark - aka Clark.
In the promo for Clutch Pearlers - from Clark's forthcoming album Sus Dog - Hayes manipulates key images of wintry English countryside, including looming trees and giant stones, and portraits of Clark himself, through the prism of analogue TV screens. Through the repetition of the gold-tinged imagery through a vibrantly kinetic edit, it draws in the viewer and maintains a hypnotic grip.
For this song about social awkwardness and insecurity - told with self-awareness and self-deprecation by Clark, who's fully focussed as a vocalist on the new album for the first time - Hayes channels the influence of a bygone age of British experimental filmmaking, from Derek Jarman's A Journey To Avebury, to cult 70s kids TV series Children Of The Stones. Lovely work.
