Joe Connor has directed a gorgeous video for legendary Japanese pop star Hikaru Utada - using in-camera ingenuity to flood the space where she dramatizes the heartfelt track Bad Mode.

The video is something of a departure in style for the director, but in creating an alluringly dreamlike edge to proceedings, Hikaru comes over as both proper pop star and intriguing artist - enigmatic, sensitive and strong.

It's courtesy of great work not only by Connor, but also DoP Alex Jamin and production design by Luke Moran-Morris. And you'll ultimately find out why the main set was built on stilts over a water tank.
