New World Sound 'Outta My Head' by Ven Gia

Rob Ulitski - 25th Sept 2019

Ven Gia explores romantic obsession in an onimous yet familiar digital world, in the very stylish, sexy and somewhat disturbing video for New World Sound's Outta My Head.

A reimagining of the iconic Kylie Minogue dance track Can't Get You Out Of My Head, this is a dark and pulsating exploration of romance and society, with a dystopian edge. Featuring a selection of characters in surreal, intimate settings, everyone is glued to their mobile phones and futuristic virtual reality headsets.

Whilst the proximity of the characters suggests they would be engaging in sexual activity, the digital world has taken hold and frozen the moment, leaving fractures of relationships and partnerships. The characters are stuck, unable to break free as the world around them continues to move on.

The film also features a cameo from New World Sound’s Ty and Jesse, as well as a recreation of the iconic Banksy street mural Mobile Lovers.

Boris Vymenets creates a neon fantasy world with an abundant use of red, blue and purple light, and the lack of natural colour mirrors the total absence of human nature in the concept. It's a long way from Dawn Shadforth's optimistic take on futurism for Minogue's 2001 original. But among the increasing number of reflections on the way smartphone obsession has changed our world, this is a distinctive one.
