Ato Yankey's video for Mikill Pane references an important cultural reference in the childhood of both director and artist - watching The Chart Show on a Saturday morning, in the late 80s and early 90s. "The N.E.O.M.S.'s '80s tone and lyrical references drew me back to the Saturday mornings as a kid, sat in front of the telly watching this old school music show called The Chart Show. My dad would be “exercising” on a broken exercise bike (that had no resistance) as he ate bacon sarnies. Memories that I have directly referenced in this video.
"We didn’t have Sky or MTV so TOTP and The Chart Show were the only places I could see music videos; it was my first introduction into that world. From way back then I was fascinated by the things and now I make them. As a kid, you never really think how much music, movies, TV and all that are going to shape your life. You just react to them, oblivious to its gravitas; they simply excite you and you enjoy them for what they are.
"The N.E.O.M.S. is a video within a video, where a Young Mikill Pane sits in front of a TV, watching an older version himself perform in a music video; illustrating how this video will not only shape his future but it is literally his future. For both Mikill and I, moments like these that were a huge influence to us creatively, so even though it’s Young Mikill Pane in the video, it’s kind of a young Mikill Yankey as well.
"The older version of Mikill takes the form of a glitchy hologram, in a retro-pseudo-futuristic digital world of electric blues; a take on the '80s perception of the future. The cold blues, hollow shapes and slow pace that dominate the first act of the video mirror Mikill's lyrics as he talks about his absence from the music industry, drawn-out struggles he faced within it and his battle to remain motivated. The track progresses his words gain momentum and fire. This change shows Mikill's perseverance as his lyrics punch through all the shit and colour bursts all over the screen culminating in a visually energetic crescendo to the video.
"The decision to end the video with Mikill Pane in the place of his younger counterparts, all grown up, frozen in awe, came from the idea that it’s those parts of Mikill’s past, whether it was tv, music or films, continue to be an inspiration to Mikill, which couldn’t be clearer with his current album."
"The Night Elm on Mare Street is a lot more personal a record than its predecessor, Blame Miss Barclay. While my debut contained only a handful of songs about my life, both The N.E.O.M.S. Part I and Part II are completely made up of songs that focus on my own roots and the branching out that I’ve done. 80s music, both through commercial songs and movie/TV soundtracks and scores, had a massive impact on me and I consider it the foundation of my creativity, so the production and visuals had to reflect that.
