Inspired by the shapes and sounds of Kingston upon Hull, Joseph Bird's Where To Build In Stone is an audio-visual project that explores the city over the course of a day.
Cate Le Bon 'Home To You' by Phil Collins
Singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon and visual artist and filmmaker Phil Collins shine a spotlight upon a proud community living though daily hardship in Eastern Slovakia - the residents of Lunik IX neighbourhood in Košice.
Collins's film is observational rather than overly dramatic, but its methodical in revealing the struggles of this Roma community, who due to successive governmental and municipal policies, often live in slums and on isolated, dilapidated estates, such as Lunik IX. And it unpretentiously invites the viewer to meet a number of protagonists, of all ages, and see them as regular people, who's lives are much harder than your's.
The most important thing that the video for Home To You achieves is to honestly reveal their humanity, a calm riposte to the politics of division and xenophobia.
Home To You was co-produced with Kino Úsmev (Cinema Smile), an independent cinema and cultural venue in Košice with a track record in socially engaged projects. Proceeds from a number of events surrounding the release of Cate Le Bon’s new album will be donated to Kino Úsmev’s new educational initiative aimed at establishing connections between young people from Lunik IX and other parts of the city through filmmaking workshops, practical production and public presentation of resulting works.
