Only Girl 'Bittersweet' by Dan French
Dan French has directed an impressive one shot video for Only Girl - that's Ellen Murphy, a young artist emerging from the DIY music scene of South East London.
Set in a mansion's grounds, Murphy is joined by three dancers who are choreographed by Liv Lockwood to reflect the meaning of her soulful, longing lyrics through movement and expression.
“Choreographically it was important to capture Ellen's spirit and the meaning of the song, both of which are so beautiful and powerful," says Lockwood about the song Bittersweet. "The movement I created, sees the dancers supporting Ellen as she moves through this luscious yet isolated landscape, both effortlessly and with a force behind it; they are kind of like a team of angels, giving her this invisible support that she needs to keep moving through.”
Ellen Murphy adds that she wrote the song "during a difficult time in my life, when I was trying to adjust and adapt myself to huge changes." She had written the song Mountain about her boyfriend suffering a brain injury, and she says that Bittersweet was about them re-entering the real world, trying to adjust and adapt to the huge difference we faced in our life.
"Despite his recovery, it was incredibly hard to accept the different course that our lives had taken. I realised that one of the only things that could keep me going was being uplifted by the love and support of those around you; the idea that this love can pull you through anything, which I wanted to convey physically in the video."
