MGMT 'Me & Michael' by Joey Frank, Randy Lee Maitland
David Knight - 8th Feb 2018
MGMT present a bizarre and hilarious modern morality tale for the melodic Me & Michael.
Delivered in a crudely homemade aesthetic by director Joey Frank and Randy Lee Maitland, it's a fast-moving satire of music biz shenanigans in the internet age: MGMT happen upon the song Me & Michael, by the unknown Filipino group True Faith, on the web. And they love it so much that they steal it - a decision that has far-reaching consequences.
Frank and Maitland's DIY approach takes a bit of getting used to, but it is actually quite a liberating influence on the story, which is gripping and comic, but also has something important to say (about the not usually fascinating subject of intellectual copyright). In fact, this is so well put together, True Faith have their very own Me & Michael video too.
As for the truth about the provenance of Me & Michael - well, this may lead to a few questions being asked. And is it just me, or does the chorus actually sound like China In Your Hands by T'Pau..?
