Saint Etienne 'Magpie Eyes' by Tash Tung
Luke Bather - 29th June 2017
Tash Tung delivers a breezy summer portrait of a quiet British town in this nostalgic clip for Saint Etienne.
Filmed around Stevenage and mixing stills and moving image, the clip imagines the band as teenagers in the modern day and follows them around a sleepy market suburb as they try and kill some time. Combining elements that are firmly set in the past (indoor market stalls with their busiest days behind them) and modern curiosities (kids on those hoverboards that were everywhere for five minutes until somebody realised they're a huge fire hazard) gives the film a timeless quality and a celebration of a side of Britain that doesn't come up all that often.
TASH TUNG:
"We wanted to capture the distinct architectural look of a post-war utopian New Town and the feeling of growing up in a British suburb, using stills film photography and moving-image portraits of local kids in the town centre.
"I cast my friend Eve Mahoney to play the young Sarah, and then found out Eve's uncle used to be the band's long-term photographer, the amazing Joe Dilworth."
