The War On Drugs 'Holding On' by Brett Haley
Luke Bather - 19th June 2017
Brett Haley's video for The War On Drugs is a good-natured tale of an older man's reconnection with the outside world.
Holding On stars Frankie Faison (who played Deputy Commissioner Burrell in The Wire, and much else) as a solitary man who undertakes a mission to recreate a photograph from his youth. On his journey, he is welcomed back into smalltown life, reigniting old aquaintances. And he's picked up by a driver, played by The War On Drugs' frontman Adam Granduciel, and the two bond on the journey to the small gazebo, where Faison's character poses for a photo in the same spot as one he posed for years earlier, with the partner he is no longer with.
With echoes of Alexander Payne's About Schmidt, this is a fine showcase for the talents and charisma of Faison - so often in secondary roles in TV and movies. And the nicely judged balance between realism and sweet entimentality is a fine accompaniment to another mellow TWOD soundscape.
