Sigur Rós 'Óveður' by Jonas Åkerlund
Luke Bather - 27th June 2016
Jonas Åkerlund's video for Sigur Rós' first new song in three years is a dark ballet of solitude.
Relying mostly on the erratic, hypnotic performance of choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir for the first section of the video, the audience are voyeurs to a world that seemingly only she inhabits. Living in a tent with a one-eyed canine companion, she writhes around the small Icelandic town with a manic grin and an unhinged intensity in her eyes. We're left to wonder what caused this? What happened to everyone else?
Then, of course, she enters a bar. The population of the town seems to have taken residence in here and things soon move from desolate to debauched as sex and gore factor in quite heavily. I'd say this is an unexpected turn for a Sigur Rós video to take, but with Åkerlund behind the wheel, you're gonna go down some pretty dark roads.
