Rag N Bone Man 'Hell Yeah' by Truman & Cooper
David Knight - 10th Dec 2014
Anthony Jorge & Jonathan Cohen – better known as directing duo Truman & Cooper – were named Best New Director at the recent UK Music Video Awards. Now comes their new video for Rag N Bone Man's Hell Yeah - and further evidence why they earned that accolade.
Not only is this a searing drama that grips from start to finish, it's delivered in a highly original fashion. The harrowing story is concerned with a young man and woman's plan to kill their violent father, about to leave jail. It shares the intensity, and the excellent nuanced performances seen in the pair's previous work for Kid Wise's Hope (also an award-winner at this year's MVAs) and Son Lux.
But then there's the added abstraction of having all the action, including flashbacks, occur in one exterior airfield-style location. It's an initially disconcerting but ingenious Lars Von Trier-style conceit that if anything, heightens the drama further. And it all leads to a white-knuckle climax. What a great way to follow-up the MVAs.
