1eyedman 'My Favourite New Year's Eve' by Daniel Janes
My Favourite New Year's Eve is the debut single from Japan-based British band 1Eyedman. The video, directed by Daniel Janes, is a woozy candy-coloured delight in which a man's humdrum life is rejuvenated after his visit to a mysterious neon realm - actually God's Own Junkyard in Walthamstow - where he meets the Neon Queen of his dreams, played by Margaux Billard...
"I'm interested in the text art of people like Bruce Nauman and Patrick Martinez, plus the cinematography of Benoît Debie on films such as Enter The Void. In God's Own Junkyard in Walthamstow - the largest collection of neon signage in Europe - we found the perfect location to pay them tribute.
"A lot of these works' power draws from their darkness: neon can represent an overstimulated hell, or the sinister pulse of a city. I wanted to turn this on its head and channel the exuberance of neon towards positive emotions - in this case, the headiness of first love.
"What's more, we had real coup in the casting as we were able to secure Margaux Billard, the female lead from John Newman's smash-hit video for Love Me Again. She was a joy to work with and when we watched the rushes it just confirmed how completely she dazzled."
