Jake Bugg 'Messed Up Kids' by Andrew Douglas
On Nowness, Jake Bugg and Andrew Douglas explain that the stereotypical choice of location and casting to express grittiness in music videos - namely the council estate and its inhabitants - is turned on its head in the video for Messed Up Kids.
To Jake, it's the home he has left behind due to his global success (with Bow in East London standing in for Nottingham's Clifton). And through the use of the Phantom camera, and striking tracking shots – captured by DoP Justin Brown and an Electronic Tracking Vehicle, driving around the tableaux at 25mph – a modern scene of urban life is dissected.
This beautifully constructed video, that brings to mind the classic 'skinhead' Guardian commercial, is also the auspicious first production out of Untitled, the new music video outfit out of JJ Stereo headed up by Natalie Arnett.
