Sam Pilling delivers an emotional split-screen tale of heartbreak for Wretch 32's Anniversary, with some thoughtful synchronous moments to propel the narrative. "Taking the reflective nature of Wretch's lyrics as an inspiration, I wanted to explore the idea of relationships - looking at a couple's intimate connection - being 'together' whilst being physically apart," Sam explains. "Using a split screen, the young couple's 'day in the life' scenario plays out on-screen. The similarities and differences of the couple's behaviour create and interesting visual juxtaposition. "The song has an underlying melancholy tone, and we all felt that it was important to remember that not all anniversaries are happy ones. Wretch's crew liked the symbolism of flowers, so I incorporated this element into the narrative. "Shot in one short but hectic day in Bermondsey, we filmed in Caroline's (the commissioner's) own flat. Tachia, our male actor, came down from Manchester the night before and kipped in my sitting room. Thomas English worked wonders swinging his unique Tango Steadicam around in the tight space. Chris Lee cast his camera's eye over the whole proceedings and both our actors nailed the subtle emotions required for the story. "Thanks to everyone involved for working like troopers on such a tight timescale and budget and thanks to Peter Clayton for letting us take over the flat and disrupting his day!"
