Legendary pop video director Vaughan Arnell returns to the medium and reunites with Take That - who he first worked with three decades ago - proceeding&nbsp;to subvert all expectations with the veteran 'boy band': he&nbsp;turns them into a rock 'n roll power trio, and then into animated versions of themselves.In the video for Sweet July, Take That&nbsp;stride onto a film stage to perform, as an old-school&nbsp;rock combo: Gary on vocals, Mark on guitar, Howard&nbsp;on drums.&nbsp;If that's the first surprise, the second is when their animated performance becomes properly animated - in several different animation styles, each one a bit more 'rock 'n roll' than the last.A minute into the video, the performance becomes an animated rendition of the performance, in the style of a black and white comic book. And that's just the start as its followed by further transformations into other comic book&nbsp;styles and textures.[imgtoken data:1]Drawing inspiration from some iconic music videos - including Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer and a-ha's Take On Me - alongside four decades of comic-book illustration, Arnell worked with&nbsp;independent artist-led VFX studio Rohtau to make this happen in the video. Three artists, based in different parts of Europe, developed each animation style under the auspices of&nbsp;Rohtau's Jordi Bares. The traditional methods of animation were then turbo-charged in their delivery by&nbsp;AI-assisted workflows.Rohtau worked closely alongside Arnell and the Merman team throughout the live action shoot of the band's performance.&nbsp;Once an edit of the live action footage was completed, the film was divided into individual sequences and assigned to the specialist artists.&nbsp;French comic-book specialist Sébastien Daniel handled the water-ink, darker ink, and colour comic-book sections, maintaining both the timeline and the visual flow; Hungary-based Zed Zara brought his expertise in textured, gritty comic-book imagery and added depth; and Linus Konetschnigin from Switzerland drew on his background in comic books, collage, paper craft, and stop-motion to help shape the more tactile, layered sections.[imgtoken data:2]Take That are so instantly recognisable, preserving their likeness while embracing bold graphic styles was central to the creative process.&nbsp;And some of the most exciting moments came from happy accidents including the large studio doors opening to cast beautiful shadows that translated into rich line-art textures across the floor."The video was inspired by the iconic videos of INXS, Peter Gabriel and a-ha - but we wanted to re-interpret that style through a contemporary AI lens," explains Arnell."Rohtau were incredible at bringing the idea to life. We had three artists from across Europe each creating different sections of the film, all coordinated by Jordi at Rohtau, so it became this genuinely collaborative process."There were hand-drawn sketches, illustrations and painted elements, all blended with different AI platforms. It ended up feeling like a real fusion of traditional craft and modern mixed-media techniques, and we were thrilled with how it all came together."

It&#39;s a very classy, beautifully-crafted belter of a video.Reflecting the sultry melancholy and brooding sexuality of the song Dancing With A Stranger, solitary Sam Smith is joined in his super modern house in the wintry countryside by ghosts - or holograms who come alive within and around him. It&#39;s a very Arnell-esque way to introduce the dancers that haunt Smith, evoking the classic Fastlove video for George Michael he directed with Anthea Benton in the mid-90s.And then comes the explosively sexy Normani, whose combination of vocals and dance add a new dimension to the song and the video. You can&#39;t take your eyes off her. And although they never meet - appropriately considering the song - the production makes the two performers dovetail together perfectly. There&#39;s great work here by a whole team of people - including DoP Will Bex and Arnell&#39;s regular editor David Webb. A real treat.&nbsp;

It was directed by Blac Ionica. "Upon hearing the track we felt inspired to create something that was firmly rooted in British folklore. 'The Celebration' is a thematically and emotively dark sounding song and we wanted to tell a simple but very cinematic and gripping story that would focus on the atmosphere of the track without being a literal translation of the lyrics. 
"As the track is so evocative and visual, we really felt that to do the song any justice we needed to tell a story."

Diamond Dogs: "One of the spectacular joys of music video is that every now and then two worlds collide. In this case, Diamond Dogs and producer Gareth Thomas had to brush up on the world of acrobatics and circus skills. 
"They chose to work with high level hand to hand acrobats Nathan and Isis alongside artists on the flying trapeze. These incredibly committed and hard working athletes were joined by the funny, fit and fabulous Will Young. So although the shoot was a long and physically challenging one for everyone involved - working with such consummate professionals from both worlds made it one of the most enjoyable and rewarding shoots we have experienced in ages".

For Westlife's new single Safe, Sean De Sparengo lays on a cinematic sheen to enhance this big sounding ballad.
De Sparengo: "I wanted to create a video for this track that a had strong emotional connect as well as the expected performance aspect, so it just seemed right to develop key scenes that featured each of the guys in dramatic and hopefully moving situations. 
"Big American TV dramas often tie up a season finale by cutting together the most emotive story-lines and then laying it against a powerful pop track to really tug on the old heartstrings and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to push in that direction.

This time round in the ongoing adventures of The Hoosiers - courtesy of regular collaborators Diamond Dogs (Phil Sansom and Olly Williams) - the band are rugged jeep-driving explorers in a volcanic land where Time forgot. They've even lost the mullets and got action hero haircuts. But there's plenty of hair elsewhere in Phil and Olly's fifth video for the band.
The Dogs do a fine job at making a quarry in Derbyshire look like a rocky outcrop east of Java, and the hairy monster-dancers are marvellous.

Phil Sansom and Olly Williams aka Diamond Dogs, having spent most of the year working on their new short film, return to promos with a beautifully made, satisfyingly slow burn of comic surrealism for Rob - who makes a utterly charming White Rabbit.
It's proper good stuff - and great to see Phil and Olly at last getting the chance to show what they can do with a decent budget. If only to hear the rigger calling out "Oi Olly, which way do you want your carrot to swing"....

It's sexy, as you might expect with a video for Peaches - but even though the styling is very Spiders From Mars, not in an ironic way. 
Kinga Burza's video for I Feel Cream is also hypnotically gorgeous, with experimental camerawork, projections, and vision-mixing - all achieved on a smidgeon, as she explains below. 
In short, it's a lovely thing - and you will be feeling it.

"When Sasha [Nixon, Partizan's head of video] first played me I Feel Cream I became excited by a fresh, softer and sensual sound from Peaches that we haven't heard before, and saw an opportunity to match it visually. 
"We were particularly restricted on this one budget-wise but Will Bex and I were always attracted to the opportunity to be experimental with this project, have some fun and do something we weren't normally able to do in pop video. Although we managed to wrangle in a couple of amazing giant-sized projectors as a favour and a decent number of willing and excited crew, we couldn't afford to shoot prime HDV so we made a conscious decision to embrace the low-fi digi quality, rather than try to make it feel like it was pretending to be something it wasn't. 
"I'd always wanted to experiment with a vintage vision mixer so Peaches become our perfect culprit. She's not exactly the type to have any qualms about working a camera sans beauty lighting, high quality format or prime lenses. Instead she gave us her best in our tiny photographic studio, the same morning as she flew into London post-gigging in Ibiza, whilst we pointed handheld Hi 8 and DV cameras at her, simultaneously feeding it into a mixer and recording my amateur mixing performances on tape. 
"We couldn't afford gels (it was really tight!) so we took advantage of our amazing projectors, using them as light sources, washing Peaches in moving lights from carefully prepared abstract Quicktimes courtesy of on-set editor Jo Apps, as well as using the projectors to project previous takes of Peaches back onto herself, whilst I mixed between Camera A and B, which were fed both through the mixer. 
"We were also really lucky we managed to wrangle some brilliant samples from normally difficult-to-impress fashion press offices. It's a video that really gained a lot from Peaches' ability to express herself in dramatic metallic shoulders, cut out leotards and thigh-high, lace up Louis Vuitton boots, taking you back to those early but exciting Bowie videos that were merely a wonderful performance of a red-headed David against a white wall wearing blue shadow. I knew if we were forced to go minimal, we were best to make a statement! 
"Darren Baldwin and I then attempted to make the final result as interesting as possible by building the cut, creatively and musically so that visually we were able to compliment the greatest track on the album as best as we could."

Peaches’ I Feel Cream by Kinga Burza

David's second video for Little Boots, following the hugely successful <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/07/31/little-boots%e2%80%99-remedy-by-david-wilson/">Remedy</a>, centres around Boots communing with the cosmos, and features Hubble-quality scenes of awesome galactic activity created by Flame artist Judy Roberts and After Effects whizz Christopher Bristow at Munky. 
And it also features another ingenious Wilson-developed technique that creates the impression that water droplets are levitating and hovering in mid-air. It was achieved by synchronizing the framerate of the camera to that of dripping stream of water. Each droplet is unique, but has been captured with such precision that it gives the impression of a single droplets being held mid-flight. 
As with his MVA-winning promo for Moray McLaren's <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/04/28/moray-mclaren%e2%80%99s-we-got-time-by-david-wilson/">We Got Time</a>, the effect wasn't created through stop-motion animation techniques, or through computer trickery, but was matched live on set with a camera turning over at 12 frames per second in order to allow the artist to lip-sync and interact with the water in real time.

Gorgeous, hypnotic and decidedly homicidal fashion film from Alex Turvey, commissioned by Dazed &amp; Confused and featured as part of onedotzero and Dazed's Fashion in Film programme at the BFI - set to the gorgeous and hypnotic Swimming by Fuck Buttons' Benjamin John Power. 
Clothes designed by Nathan Jenden, Rupert Sanderson, Hannah Marshall, Louise Goldin &amp; Manjit Deu, wigs and hair by the Sensational Charlie Le Mindu, props by MADE. And ultimately quite reminiscent of Anton Corbijn's great video for Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box. Aww.
