New electro-pop singer-songwriter&nbsp;Reeve. makes a highly memorable impression in Ataka51's darkly arresting&nbsp;promo for Wax On You. She melts before our very eyes.The video opens with the artist sitting on the side of a bathtub, dripping with a mysterious substance. Is she melting? Is it acid? The clue is in the songtitle.As Reeve's wax-like body begins to break down, chunks of flesh disappearing and becoming displaced, the video takes a surreal, body-horror-esque turn. It's transfixing rather than stomach-churning, beautifully haunting in its presentation.&nbsp;This is a striking vision by Ataka51 - the four-person&nbsp;'displaced&nbsp;video/film collective' now based in Paris - which&nbsp;dives into uncanny territory with fearless abandon. A brilliant feat of VFX which also augments a powerful performance from this new artist.&nbsp;It's safe to say that the imagery here will stick&nbsp;in your mind long after watching.&nbsp;&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]

Jim Hosking delviers a deliciously daft, and ultimately joyous expression of female bonding for Warpaint's Hips.This has a quality of offbeat humour all of its own, based around the superb casting of this video and a terrific use of a classic English seaside location. Great stuff.&nbsp;“Hips has a scuttling intensity to it, it sounds like someone desperately trying to find something - or at least that’s what it seemed to me," explains Hosking. "I listened to it&nbsp;repeatedly and kept seeing women searching for each other in a seaside town. Ideas present themselves and it’s not about logic or reason, it’s about emotion. And here the&nbsp;emotion suggested identically dressed women finding each other in the English town of Southend-On-Sea.““The track seemed to have its own secret language and I wanted the women in the video to seem to have their own secret language too.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

A struggling&nbsp;artist, working alone in an empty&nbsp;country house, becomes obsessed by a golden mask&nbsp;- in Alexander Brown's video for Claptone's Just A Ghost.&nbsp;As the artist becomes increasingly haunted, in his dreams and otherwise, by the appearance of&nbsp;a mysterious masked man and his party&nbsp;guests, Brown concocts a swirling fever dream of a narrative, filled with glimpses of trangressions and tangled visions.The video is for a track from the often-masked dance producer, featuring the&nbsp;unmistakeable voice&nbsp;of Seal, returning after a six year absence.&nbsp;It was shot, appropriately enough, in the house where they filmed that latterday Hammer horror classic The Woman In Black.Alexander Brown tells us about the experience of making the video.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>I saw this as an origin story... in which Claptone could comfortably inhabit as a character.</blockquote>What kind of brief did Claptone give you and what were your immediate thoughts when you saw it? When Claptone approached me, the brief was fairly loose. Basically, I could pitch anything, but the focus was to make sure Claptone the character wasn’t mishandled.I sort of saw this as an origin story, not really explaining Claptone, but making the video feel like a story in which Claptone could comfortably inhabit as a character - much in the same was Daft Punk were always viewed as robots, or Gorillaz record at Kong studios. I wanted it to feel like Claptone had a reason for being in this world. I wanted the Claptone mask to be a character itself, a sort of presence in the house.When I wrote the idea, it was the middle of winter, in the middle of lockdown, and I guess the video was riffing on the idea of memories of how much fun it was having parties, being social, and how winter can feel so isolating. Initially, I had the idea of a butler left in a mothballed country house - sort of inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro's Remains Of The Day - someone who has been left behind and finds himself reflecting on times gone by.[imgtoken data:2]<blockquote>I wanted the Claptone mask to be a character itself, a sort of presence in the house.</blockquote>Claptone liked the idea but didn’t want to have someone look like his servant, so we developed the idea into a struggling artist going through a creative block. This was great because it gave him something to do apart from polishing the silverware - though I still think that would have been fun too.Tell us about filming. How was this shot? We shot this in the same house that the 2011 movie The Woman in Black was shot. The house has been renovated over the last three years and a lot of it was a building site, but we were very lucky to have the access. We shot it all in one day, which was a testament to the wonderful crew. We had a great second unit to pick up some of the scenes, as there was just too much to cram in. We had a great team thanks to Ellis [Fox, producer].[imgtoken data:3]What do the masks signify? The masks don’t really signify anything. Claptone wears a mask to DJ, and I wanted him to have some friends who felt as though they occupied the same astral plane as him. I wanted the video to have a Stanley Kubrick feel - Eyes Wide Shut being an obvious reference - but beyond that, I think I just wanted Eduardo (the hero) to feel out of place at this gathering.&nbsp;

A woman drags an injured companion through an alien landscape in&nbsp;Dylan Pharazyn's video for Metz.&nbsp;In Blind Youth Industrial Park, the pair are tracked by a squad of armed soldiers in pursuit, using an anachronistic device that displays the characters in a chromatic, almost heat-vision style map.&nbsp;Wonderfully bold and cinematic, the video is a short film in itself, building to an action-packed climax and intriguing twist.DoP&nbsp;Adam Luxton builds upon the tension and unease of the concept through the repeated use of&nbsp;static wide shots, showing there is no way out and the journey is boundless (and most probably futile).&nbsp;Art directors&nbsp;Nic Macallan and&nbsp;Svet Mateev also do a phenomenal job at making the unusual feel real, with custom props and carefully considered outfits which elevate the alien concept.&nbsp;

The director has up-sticked back to the family farm, to spend some quality time with his folks.So at the moment, he's spending&nbsp;time restoring the old VW Camper, and devouring the latest Hilary Mantel on audiobook. When he's not worrying the sheep, that is...What were you working on before the lockdown? Having finished my video for Orlando Weeks' Blood Sugar (below) I had just started pre-production on a music video for a US band, to be shot in London. . In the end we decided to put production on hold until after&nbsp;lockdown ends as it was a video requiring people and costumes. I’m now living in the country with my mum and dad. It’s kinda like the Darling Buds of May, but with a lot more shouting.[vidtoken data:0]What are you working on now? I’m currently working on a book design for an upcoming history of the band Idlewild. In my spare time, I’ve turned my attention to restoring my 1972 VW&nbsp;camper van while the sun is shining. The upside of being a director, is that being out of work for months on end is hardly a novel situation. I always have a slew of projects waiting for my attention. The only difference is there’s nothing to pitch on.<blockquote>The thing that makes quarantine so novel, is that everyone else is in the same boat with you instead of paddling alone.</blockquote>What's the most surprising, or least predictable thing, that's happened to you during quarantine? I think being in quarantine has made me value space and being more self-sustainable. I suppose&nbsp;that’s entirely predictable… It’s made me learn how to use a sewing&nbsp;machine and a shepherd's crook, is that better?My mum has a field full of lambs that are doing their best to get infections, so a good hour of my day is spent chasing them around like an idiot trying to&nbsp;catch the ones with squinty eyes. Nicolas Jack Davies got into directing video remotely by Zoom almost before everyone else, with Marcus Mumford. And he thinks that staying home has had a beneficial effect on his working habits. He also gets to watch lots of telly with his kids - even if that sometimes leaves him in tears...What were you working on before the lockdown? Commercials in the UK and the States - both postponed. Both picking up when we’re out the other side of lockdown apparently… fingers crossed.What are you working on now? Just shot a lockdown video for Marcus Mumford, which was a challenge, but fun to pull off. Seems like ages ago now as so much of this style has found its way to our screen so quickly, but it felt genuinely exciting (if that’s a suitable word for these times) to try and pull something like that off without leaving the house![vidtoken data:0]I’ve been working&nbsp;on a feature doc about the bands At The Drive In and The Mars Volta, and the two central figures of those bands Omar and Cedric. Fortunately, a huge part of it is editing pre-existing footage from the last 25-30 years, so it can be managed at a social distance. So far at least!What's the most surprising, or least predictable thing, that's happened to you&nbsp;during quarantine? Most surprising is how much having a (unavoidably) strict routine has had a positive effect on my work. I’m the most disorganised person and spend my workdays rambling from production offices to edit houses, so to have a routine and a consistent place of work has really benefitted me. The least predictable thing is trying to handle my kids at the same time as working - a total minefield.What's the favourite part of your daily routine? And it does feel weirdly normal now. Although I’m definitely in that camp of people who’ve started to have genuinely weird vivid dreams. Last night I entered drug rehabilitation with the 80s/90s professional wrestler <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C4lK41SX-Q">Macho Man Randy Savage</a> after being arrested repeatedly for driving down a one-way street the wrong way.What have you learned about yourself during quarantine? That in normal daily life, I don’t talk to my friends and family nearly enough about their lives.[imgtoken data:1]Best meal you have eaten/are regularly cooking (send photo, if poss!) I went through a phase of making soups because we fucked up the veg order twice in a row! But I’ve developed a pretty mean bean chilli, and my BBQ skills have improved tenfold.Best thing you’ve watched, or heard, while on lockdown, and why? And the&nbsp;worst...? The best?&nbsp;The first two episodes of The Last Dance on Netflix got me hooked in. I watched Big Hero Six with my youngest son and cried my eyes out twice.[vidtoken data:1]The worst? Marcus Mumford - You'll Never Walk Alone

Faced with the issues of enforced quarantine in making his video for Marcus Mumford's version of You'll Never Walk Alone, Nicolas Jack Davies turned to Zoom - possibly before most of us had heard of it -&nbsp;and&nbsp;pioneered some principles of the current phase of remote directing. Crucially&nbsp;the end result,&nbsp;with Mumford performing with Reuben James from their respective homes, has real emotional impact.Mumford's recording of the classic song - best known for its associations with&nbsp;Liverpool FC - preceded the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, and its purpose was always to support causes close to his heart: The Grenfell Trust and War Child UK. But the fact that Mumford and James had to rig up the camera set-up themselves, as per the directions of Davies and DoP Edgar Dubrovskiy, certainly adds another layer of purpose to the project.It was also made feasible by Davies' longstanding relationship with Mumford, that goes back to the very early days of Mumford &amp; Sons, and resumed last year after a long hiatus with the music video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/12/10/mumford-sons-blind-leading-blind-nicolas-jack-davies/62296" target="_blank">Blind Leading The Blind</a>, from the band's recent album Delta.&nbsp;Dubrovskiy also worked on that video, as did editor Liam Bachler, who does a fine job here with the ebb and flow of the creative process, where the usual separation&nbsp;of 'BTS' and 'video' disappears.

Marcus Mumford ft Reuben James 'You'll Never Walk Alone' by Nicolas Jack Davies

Faced with the demands of the Covid-19 lockdown, Orlando Weeks and director Alexander Brown have created an 'iso video' that embraces lo-fi experimentation with wonderfully hypnotic results.Brown sent the ex-Maccabees bandmember a Canon 5D (maybe the one he used when he was launching his directing career a decade ago) for him to self-shoot his performance of Blood Sugar. He has taken that footage and run it through circuit mixers to create distorted visual effects. Weeks's head has become a disembodied graphic form, composed of lines of light, sometimes a sort of inverse sillhouette, other times a face caught in chiaroscuro-profile.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This is Brown's first video since his <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2018/01/26/james-blake-if-car-beside-you-moves-ahead-alexander-brown/51519" target="_blank">James Blake video for If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead</a> - another fascinating exercise in visual distortion. The current situation may have instigated it, but like his Blake video the results of the experimentation are not just lockdown-specific. They work entirely on their own terms.

Marcus Mumford delivers the emotion at the heart of his band's new track Blind Leading The Blind through a cathartic performance on the drums, in this&nbsp;intense yet reflective video directed by Nicolas Jack Davies.Shot whilst the group were on tour in Bangkok, the industrial&nbsp;laundry setting works perfectly, ensuring Mumford's performance is&nbsp;the sole focus for the duration of the video.&nbsp;Edgar Dubrovskiy's use of super-slow motion creates snapshots of the action - shot on a Phantom 6K -&nbsp;allows the viewer to ponder these heightened emotional moments and the setting. And the further use of strobe lights creates a frenetic and exaggerated energy which Marcus Mumford thrives in. And ultimately this is all about Mumford's powerfully physical yet emotional&nbsp;performance.The video is the result of a renewed collaboration between Mumford &amp; Sons&nbsp;and Davies - formerly of directing duo Fred &amp; Nick, who directed much of the band's visual output&nbsp;for their first two albums. Having shot the band performing the track at ACL in October, Davies has now directed a strongly cinematic accompaniment to this powerful track&nbsp;- pure&nbsp;in its concept, and executed very well indeed.[imgtoken data:1]

Harmless at first, these intruders creep closer in rapid-fire visions. But in the free-fall of a tempestuous romance, the couple quickly forget them, and are cursed to repeat the same mistakes time and again.Pharazyn’s video has both a punk energy and the ruthless pace of a contemporary slasher.&nbsp;Editor Lucas Baynes borrows a strobing effect from the horror genre, creating a world that oscillates between reality and paranoid delusion.
