A serene, contemplative Karen O sings quietly about&nbsp;despair&nbsp;in some anonymous dive bar underneath a tired disco ball. Nick Zinner, tranquil, looks out from a yellow cab while Brian Chase nearly falls asleep on the subway.This is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Back in New York City. Back on their home turf. And director Patrick Daughters catches the band at this one magnificent moment, when we all realise they&#39;re now as much a part of indie rock&#39;s foundation as the Empire State Building is of America.And so, the three assembled atop the Empire State, like they&#39;ve heeded a sonic call to arms. Nick&#39;s guitar reverberates from America&#39;s crown jewel at a dizzying 1,224 feet and you can almost feel it shuddering through the city. As a matter of fact, they played their instruments live during the shoot, letting those powerful gusts of wind quite literally carry every drum beat and chord over New York at dawn.This is their journey. From obscure art-rockers holding the attention of small dive bar crowds over a decade ago, to being the first band ever to shoot a video on top of this truly iconic landmark. This is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with indie rock&#39;s torch in hand.

It&#39;s a leftfield idea that is initially almost bamboozling, because the video is true to the traditions of the genre. Patrick, back to directing after a year-plus sabbatical, plays it straight with a combination of intrigue, romance, evildoing and derring-do. You just have to disentangle a number of simultaneous storylines, set in different timeframes and places (both South and North Korea) involving the same actors playing similar roles in the different narratives.Almost surprising too to see Patrick Daughters returning with something so averse to the cinematic production values for which he&#39;s renowned. But its so faithful to the subject you&#39;d be forgiven for thinking its the real McCoy, until a few characters start lipsyncing...

Patrick Daughter&#39;s nice &#39;n creepy new one for Grizzly Bear&#39;s excellent single, from their acclaimed new album. That&#39;s the band in the video, looking increasingly happy. So happy that their eyes are getting larger and their skin is really glowing. Does that usually happen when you have a hit record Probably...Patrick simply turns the band into eery, vacuous, doll men, kitted out like 1950s Freshmen, and the effect is hypnotic and intense. And creepy.It was done through VFX work at The Mill in Los Angeles. Probably the most prominent effect is the eye enlargement - achieved not only by increasing size, but compositing left and right eyes from different takes. Little things mean a lot.Lead Flame artist Tara DeMarco, says: &quot;We were asked to make the skin porcelain-like - smooth and shiny with a transparent, prosthetic like quality&quot;. And then it starts glowing...Compositors at The Mill LA worked in almost 70 different effect shots, as the band members&#39; faces gradually increase in luminosity until the sparks start flying...&nbsp;

We like Barnaby Clay's muddy video for Services' Presenter. Now here's his bloody video for indie-rock prodigies TMOT as one half of directing team Kids With Canes Inc. - the other half being his girlfriend Karen O, who also appears on the track with Yeah Yeah Yeah's colleague Nick Zinner.
With cameos from various New York cult heroes, including Mike D, Gibby Haynes, Russell Simins and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, everyone got to dress up, and then die in a glorious Romero-esque fashion. Yes, even the lovely kiddie-winks.
