Tanu Muino brings us the first outstanding British music video event of 2023 with Sam Smith's unabashed, splendidly theatrical and joyfully outrageous video for I'm Not Here To Make Friends.Exuberant,&nbsp;eccentric, and defiantly brazen, this sees Sam Smith dispensing with any last vestige of previous public incarnations and embracing their queer superstar status with gusto - but also with a healthy self-knowing nod and a wink.Sam arrives by helicopter to a historic countryside manor, joining&nbsp;a gregarious crowd to engage is an extravagant costume party for the ages, over an inspirational sample of RuPaul before the disco beat of this surefire smash kicks in. And eyebrows&nbsp;are soon being raised...[imgtoken data:1]There is dancing. There are some extraordinary outfits. There's rowdy behaviour. And there is some very suggestive things going on, including a scene that may possibly be inspired by Frankie Goes To Hollywood's video for Relax!Throughout is the stunning array of costumes and looks, and Sam's playful and sexy performance, which dazzles in every vignette. They are clearly having the time of their lives.&nbsp;Bringing together so many different layers and inspirations - including a knowing nod to Steven Klein's&nbsp;promo for Gaga's Alejandro&nbsp;- the video oozes self-love and an excitable confidence, and is the perfect release to complement Gloria, Smith's just-released new album.It just ticks all the boxes it's supposed to tick - and that is really down to the genius of Tanu Muino. She just knows what a pop video like this should do, and achieved it, from start to finish.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tanu Muino directs a bold dance&nbsp;promo for Elton John and Britney Spears collab Hold Me Closer.&nbsp;The update to the iconic track Tiny Dancer comes complete with a refreshing video, effortlessly joyous and celebratory, with a brilliant use of colour, depicting several pairs of dancers in beautiful locations around the world.[imgtoken data:1]With event songs like this, the visuals can often feel incomplete without the artists in them, however Muino and team ensure that all eyes are on the beauty of the choreography - by LA-based choreographer Jacob Jonas - and captivating locations.[imgtoken data:2]The resulting project more than makes up for their absence. Beautifully shot by Muino's regular collaborator Nikita&nbsp;Kuzmenko - also nominated at the inaugural Best DoP Award at this year's UKMVAs - and brilliantly edited by Carlos Font Clos - it offers a marvellous, and emotional new perspective to this classic&nbsp;song.&nbsp;

Hold on to your hats - Amber Grace Johnson has directed a spectacular promo for FKA twigs's collaboration with The Weekend.Pulsating with a riotous energy from the get-go, we see twigs dissolve from a 3D avatar and launch&nbsp;into&nbsp;impassioned choreography with a group of dancers, in a visceral interpretation&nbsp;of the songtitle, Tears In The Club.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;As the lights scintillate, the vignettes morph to&nbsp;sizzling&nbsp;setups on a dentist chair, and pole dancing in an underwater chamber, as Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd watches with an emotional smile. But by the end, it's twigs who has chasing down a miniature Abel, like a cat toying with a mouse.[imgtoken data:2]&nbsp;&nbsp;Shot in a breathless&nbsp;hyperreal style, this is twigs in full-on pop video mode, but retaining that sense of raw emotion that is a central hallmark&nbsp;of her body of work.&nbsp;At the same time, it could also be the sexiest&nbsp;twigs video ever - which is saying something.This is twigs's&nbsp;first music video collaboration with&nbsp;Amber Grace Johnson,&nbsp;and evidently they are a heaven-made match. It certainly confirms that this is a director making some of the most exciting and coolest&nbsp;work in pop videos right now.&nbsp;

Amy Allen is stalked by an unknown aggressor in Similar But Different's video for Difficult.&nbsp;Channelling a paranormal, retro-horror aesthetic, the directing duo - Charlotte Fassler and Dani Girdwood - set the scene using an isolated desert location, mysterious in its own right with an overbearing sense of mystery.&nbsp;We follow Amy as she is watched by a shadowy figure and chased by a reckless driver, only to discover she’s trapped in a repeating loop of her own making. The video’s visuals echo the song’s lyrics and Amy’s battle with herself.The mysterious and dynamic video is complimented by its clever use of surveillance footage and nature documentary clips adding an additional layer to the visual metaphor. The duo used production restraints to their advantage, creating a rawness felt onscreen through Amy’s dramatic, dynamic and energetic performance.&nbsp;

Dave Meyers directs an emotional and pertinent&nbsp;visual for Anderson Paak's Lockdown.Reflecting on racial injustice, police brutality and the global pandemic, the video is an introspective exploration of how society has reached its tipping point, and a call for systematic change.&nbsp;Featuring cameos from&nbsp;Dominic Fike,&nbsp;Andra Day, Jay Rock, Syd of the Internet and .Paak's son Soul Rasheed, amongst others,&nbsp;Lockdown is made up of several performance vignettes, stylised in a subtle way with offbeat angles and composition, but pared down from some of Meyers' more fantastical work. The intimate performances are the focus here, and the video ensures&nbsp;the issues at hand remain centre-stage.&nbsp;The animation at the end of the video, detailing the names of those killed through police brutality, is a striking wake up call: "The People Are Rising". All cast and crew salaries were donated to Beam, Dream Defenders and Color Of Change.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Phil Good is joined by a couple of puppet sidekicks&nbsp;in Spencer Graves's video for Wonder.&nbsp;Capturing his signature blend of sincerity and humour, the video finds Phil contemplating what his ex may be up to in her new life, through two puppets affectionately dubbed Harvey and Barbara. Quirky and offbeat, the pairing of Good's laid-back performance and the puppets' frenetic and childlike style creates a nostalgic mood, a moment for reflection and chance to relive the good times.&nbsp;Tehillah De Castro utilises the abundant natural light in the garage location to create a subdued, desaturated vision of the puppets and their world. This isn't kids TV, where things are squeaky clean and innocent, this is the real world with real stories, and the choice to keep the lighting and mood naturalistic helps keep it sincere. The art direction strikes&nbsp;a balance between silly and mature, with the juxtaposition of childish crayon drawings and superbly crafted cardboard sets. And the puppets themselves are a delight.&nbsp;&nbsp;

But then there&#39;s lots of LAUVs all at once. I still don&#39;t know how they do that.
