Roisin Murphy has created a proper disco banger in Narcissus, and she has also directed the video for the track which channels the fabulously kitsch glamour of the original Age of Disco.Roisin's love of the Italian 'Queen of TV'&nbsp;Raffaella Carrà, led her to make a&nbsp;fairly faithful&nbsp;recreation of a '70s disco-era performance from her TV show - which has benefitted from&nbsp;added layers&nbsp;of 70s-style video FX.Roisin always keeps within the parameters of a TV-like live performance in real time. But due to a combination of her distinctive charisma,&nbsp;and a brilliant edit by Ben Unwin, this becomes something more than its inspiration. It's an altogether&nbsp;more transcendent experience.&nbsp;It's out there, it's very Roisin, and it's amazing.&nbsp;And,&nbsp;let's face it, right now we need a brilliant song and a video like this.

Having directed her own videos for a while,&nbsp;Roisín Murphy now takes the plunge&nbsp;for the first time with another artist, coming up with a subversive knockabout comedy for The Fat White Family which gets to grips with the joys of Monty Python.The video for Tastes Good With The Money is a loose homage to some classic Python moments from the original Flying Circus TV series, in particular the most aggressively violent bits, and the Pythons&#39; fondness for dressing up as old ladies.So prepare yourself&nbsp;for a remake of Noel Coward&#39;s Salad Days, as directed by Sam Peckinpah, now reimagined by Roisin Murphy and FWF. It&#39;s bloody... Plus a nice cameo by Baxter Dury thrown in for good measure.

The third video to come from Róisín&nbsp;Murphy's collaborative ventures with Maurice Fulton is another wildly experimental vision directed by the artist herself.Following the overriding theme for the previous two, Róisín takes us to the dancefloor and really messes with our heads. This time for Jacuzzi Rollercoaster, there are cutout images akimbo:&nbsp;Róisín, Maurice, and her coterie of brain-addled, sweaty dancers are endlessly multiplied in mesmerising, elegantly rendered patterns.Nice job on the VFX by the extremely patient and hardworking post team at Squire - all achieved, of course, on a challenging budget. And it has been said before here, but it's worth repeating that as well as a great musician,&nbsp;Róisín Murphy is really a very talented director and visual artist too.&nbsp;

Having gone from talented on-screen performer to promising music video director&nbsp;with her&nbsp;last&nbsp;album, the Mercury Prize-nominated&nbsp;Hairless Toys,&nbsp;now&nbsp;Róisín Murphy takes things to the next level.&nbsp;Róisín&#39;s video for Ten Miles High, from the forthcoming LP&nbsp;Take Her Up To Monto, adopts&nbsp;a very different tack to the acclaimed videos from Hairless Toys, which were all inspired by the&nbsp;work of great directors of world cinema. This time her canvas is modern London, and operating like a guerilla-video artist, she performs the track in a variety of public spaces in central London, and the City - and mainly on the Tube.Róisín also brings her highly developed sense of style to everyday London, but most&nbsp;strikingly &ndash; and appropriately, at a time when central London mostly resembles a building site &ndash; she&#39;s&nbsp;usually wearing the ubiquitous uniform of the Crossrail construction worker, blending seamlessly in with her environment. And the strangeness of this video art experiment is enhanced by virtually every image itself being manipulated in post in some way.&nbsp;With her development as a visual as well as a music artist reaching a new phase,&nbsp;Róisín Murphy is now also joining the director&#39;s roster of London-based production company Good Egg, for representation to direct videos for other artists, and other content. Promo asked Roisin about the video, and her future ambitions as a director.[imgtoken data:1]&bull; You seem to have taken the changing face of London as inspiration for the Ten Miles High video. How would you explain the idea behind it? How does it relate to the track?&nbsp;&nbsp;This visual concept comes directly from my rather exuberant love of architecture, something I&#39;ve had a passion for since my teenage years. I live in London and most of my days are spent marvelling at the ever-changing landscape. I photograph much of what I see. I engage in discussion on a couple of architectural-social-media platforms. All this means London as a shoot-location has been well scouted by me. But it&#39;s not just about buildings, I also find the transport infrastructure fascinating &ndash; the Tube, the Overground, the DLR and their stations became part of the video-art too. The desire is to show you how I see things in the here and now and to do so joyously. As far as connection to the track, I think it&#39;s asking you to elevate yourself stratospherically whilst keeping you feet firmly on the ground.<blockquote>&quot;I live in London and most of my days are spent marvelling at the ever-changing landscape.&quot; &nbsp;</blockquote>&bull; Is this your first experience of guerrilla-style shooting? How easy was it to wander around, including being dressed like a Crossrail construction worker, and perform in public spaces? &nbsp;They know me now, the guys on the building-site around Tottenham Court Road and on several other sites in central London. I&#39;ve been hanging around dressed in high vis trying to blend in. All the while I&#39;m being surreptitiously&nbsp;filmed by a very small but quite miraculous digital camera. We are a small unit and light on our feet, we grab footage when and where we find it, without permission or permits. Although at first nobody knew what to make of this construction-woman dancing and singing at the edge of their turf, now they know me they just step out of the way and maybe throw their eyes up to heaven. The strange thing is people try not to look. I get on a bus singing and dancing and they all look away.[imgtoken data:2]&nbsp;&bull; It&rsquo;s a real departure from your videos from Hairless Toys, both in the way it was shot, and the post production effects work. Did it turn out the way you planned it beforehand?&nbsp;The videos I made last year were all trapped in a past memory - the Seventies, the Nineties. This was meant to return me to the present moment.&nbsp;I made a few trailers and teasers for my album before I cut the promo for TMH. The intention from the start was to treat the footage irreverently, so I experimented on the trailers, trying everything I could in an edit suite, cutting up the image, replicating images, creating borders, reversing and mirroring. So yes I was pretty prepared when it can to making the video.<blockquote>&quot;My love for directing is getting deep.&quot;&nbsp;</blockquote>&bull; After making four videos now of your own music you&rsquo;ve now signed as a director to Good Egg. Are you ready to start directing videos for other people, or are you more interested in other visual projects?&nbsp;No point not being open I suppose. For sure it&#39;s gonna be interesting when/if I remove myself (my persona) from my work. Who knows where this is taking me? But my love for directing is getting deep.&nbsp;

Róisín Murphy is the special guest at BUG 49 at the BFI Southbank this evening (December 4th), where she&#39;ll be talking about her music videos both as wonderful on-screen performer and now, with the videos for tracks from her Mercury Award-nominated album Hairless Toys, also as a director.And now the footage from her recent Unputdownable video, as well as additional material from the shoot, has been used to create a new video for the Maurice Fulton remix of House Of Glass. A visual remix for an audio remix, in fact.

Following on from her impressive directing debut with the video for&nbsp;<a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2015/04/15/roisin-murphy-exploitation-roisin-murphy" target="_blank">Exploitation</a>, where she&nbsp;created and played a fading-star persona inspired by the actresses she loves, like Gina Rowlands and Catherine Deneuve,&nbsp;Róisín Murphy has now directed a startlingly good video for Evil Eyes,&nbsp;the next single from her first album in seven years, and created another character of intriguing depth.Again, Róisín plays&nbsp;a woman who clearly has a past, and is finding it difficult to deal with the everyday present. She&#39;s a mother who&#39;s unpredictable behaviour suggests a touch of madness - perhaps more than a touch &ndash;&nbsp;existing within&nbsp;a hyperreal, surrealized domestic environment. And not only does she give a riveting performance, but its directed with real visual flair.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]No doubt she&#39;s learned a thing or two along the way, making videos with the likes of Dawn Shadforth, Hammer &amp; Tongs, and others.&nbsp;And she&#39;s clearly getting great support from her production team, led by executive producer Phil Tidy. In a career that includes many&nbsp;notable music videos, both as a solo artist and in her old band Moloko,&nbsp;Roisin Murphy has taken the plunge and directed the video for her track Exploitation herself.&nbsp;Nominally, it&#39;s set up like the trailer for a movie, which&nbsp;allows for a freeform exploration on the nature of fame and identity, in which&nbsp;Roisin plays as the main&nbsp;character: a&nbsp;middle-age&nbsp;actress in the midst of some kind of breakdown.She confronts the issue head on, delving into a character that appears obsessed with her appearance, aiming to reach the&nbsp;flawless ideal of beauty used to sell products. There&#39;s a blurring of reality&nbsp;and fiction,&nbsp;mirroring&nbsp;the disorientation of the actress as she struggles to maintain her public persona.It&#39;s a wholly distinctive piece of work. And we asked Roisin to shed further light about how the video for Exploitation came into being - the inspiration, the concept, and the process...[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;<blockquote>&quot;It is reference heavy,&nbsp;particularly an ad where Fay Dunaway seductively peels and eats a boiled egg!&quot;</blockquote>PN: Could you tell us more about your decision to direct your own music video?RM:&nbsp;I had some sleepless nights making the decision to direct my video. It&#39;s been seven years since the last Roisin Murphy film outing,&nbsp;so the pressure was on to create something that could satisfy my rather beleaguered fan base. The videos from my last album were undoubtedly strong and crucially expensive but in today&#39;s music industry those bugets are simply out of my reach. So I was in fact, not sure I should do videos at all. An old friend and film producer Phil Tidy&nbsp;convinced me we could do it, promising he could cover all eventualities apart from a lack&nbsp;of ideas and vision.&nbsp;Are there any cinematic or theatrical references or influences that you could shed any light on?After such a long spell away from making visuals I had built up a store of references and inspiration. This video really springs from the photo shoot I did for the album sleeve in which I developed a strange sort of vintage aesthetic and a character to go with this new era. The character is a woman from my childhood memory &ndash;&nbsp;partly my own mother, partly film stars such as Fay Dunaway, Catherine Deneuve and Gina Rowlands. They were&nbsp;already mature in the 80&#39;s as I was growing up. I was looking for icons I could relate to, so I had to dig a little deeper because for me now at 41 there is no one in pop music I can truly feel a connection to.There seems to be a lot here about performance and female identity. Is there a specific message you wanted to convey, or do you prefer to leave it open to interpretation?Actresses have always provided me with inspiration and the video is the story of one caught up in a manipulative relationship and an exploitative world where creativity is always compromised by commercial concerns. The idea was of a perpetual play and a perpetual advert, high art vs. low commercial interests, it&#39;s meant to disorientate.<blockquote>&quot;I was looking for icons I could relate to, so I had to dig a little deeper. At 41 there is no one in pop music I can truly feel a connection to.&quot;</blockquote>I watched a fair bit John Cassavetes too and took direct inspiration from Chanel No.&nbsp;5 ads featuring Catherine Deneuve &ndash; though my perfume &quot;assumptions&quot; is a distinctly lower priced concoction. And so, after sleepless nights of indecision I must say I enjoyed making this video. I suppose exploiting myself shouldn&#39;t feel so good, but it does.&nbsp;
