Ninian Doff

Released to tie-in with the release of his acclaimed debut feature Get Duked! on Amazon last week, Ninian Doff provides the movie's young quartet of unlikely heroes&nbsp;with a new mission of extreme&nbsp;mischief: an ill-advised break-in at a&nbsp;mansion containing the prized possessions of Run The Jewels and 2 Chainz.&nbsp;The feckless foursome's blundering efforts at a daring heist is overseen at all times by a series of animated portraits, and sculptures, of RTJ's Killer Mike and El-p, and guest star 2 Chainz. They discover the famous RTJ gloves, and some pink jewels giving off some psychotropic properties - and then they go too far.As in Get Duked!, the riotous fun that Doff creates around his characters transitions effortlessly from realistic live action comedy to something way more extreme and cartoonish - shrinking the characters down in a dimension,&nbsp;giving them metallic limbs and sending their faces into supersonic time warps, as they confront giant version of RTJ and 2 Chainz.[imgtoken data:1]It is high concept aesthetic - arguably a big step further from the movie - and it involved a really big production effort including shoots of the artists in New York and Atlanta - with Colin Read providing second unit directing duties - while Doff, aided and abetted by regular DoP Patrick Meller, shot the main action with his Get Duked! cast in the UK.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is a brilliant effort - but to properly enjoy, and get to know and love the characters, go check out the feature first.

Ninian Doff is back with his first music video since 2016, and it&#39;s a reunion with The Chemical Brothers to tell a wonderful shaggy dog&#39;s story, all about a super-talented pooch, trained to take on man&#39;s biggest challenges.Rescued from the streets by a young female scientist (Tegen Short), our canine hero/heroine is fast-tracked into a secret programme that leads&nbsp;to the cockpit of a F1 car speeding around a test circuit - and then behind the controls of a space rocket.It&#39;s classic Doff - outlandish, charming, beautifully executed, and a very apt visual to The Chems&#39; track We&#39;ve Got To Try, the latest release from their forthcoming album, No Geography.It&#39;s also the second time Doff has collaborated with the iconic dance outfit, following <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2015/08/18/chemical-brothers-%E2%80%98sometimes-i-feel-so-deserted%E2%80%99-ninian-doff/36165" target="_blank">Sometimes I Feel Deserted</a>. And just a huge pleasure to have Ninian Doff - whos first feature Boyz In The Wood (starring Eddie Izzard)&nbsp;will be released later this year - back in the world of music videos, at least for a while.

After the phenomenal success of <a href="http://promonews.tv/videos/2016/01/13/miike-snow-genghis-khan-ninian-doff" target="_blank">Genghis Khan</a>,&nbsp;Ninian Doff brings the team all back together - cast and crew &ndash; for another Miike Snow video and a further revisionist, musical take&nbsp;on Cold War iconography. And whereas Genghis Khan was a delightful take on the culture of James Bond, with My Trigger, the inspiration is history itself.Edward Hayes-Neary (the Bond-like hero in Genghis Khan) plays US President John&nbsp;F Kennedy, while Adam Jones&nbsp;(the crazed, mixed-up supervillain) plays Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev, in a replay of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 - the closest the superpowers came to all-out nuclear war. Which is cue for the respective&nbsp;leaders to engage in fantasies about sex and the nuclear button, and Busby Berkeley style musical routines.&nbsp;Once again, Patrick Meller provides the lush 35mm cinematography, Supple Nam the choreography, Tim Gibson the production design and Russ Hallard the edit. Bees, butterflies, flowers, pollination... it&#39;s the most natural thing in the&nbsp;world. And&nbsp;Ninian Doff has captured all that&nbsp;and more in all its breathtaking beauty - and then&nbsp;made it erotic by pairing it&nbsp;to the&nbsp;extremely&nbsp;explicit lyrics of&nbsp;Run The Jewels&#39; Love Again.&nbsp;Produced by Pulse in association with online US comedy channel JASH, it&nbsp;was shot by specialist&nbsp;nature documentary DOP&nbsp;Rod Clarke&nbsp;over five days in Bristol. Then editor Paul O&#39;Reilly had the mammoth task of transforming 17 hours of footage into a sizzling four minutes of viewing (and listening), giving&nbsp;the insects and plants the personality to pull off the sexual references.&ldquo;The challenge was choosing the right moments to give each insect a personality throughout the film,&rdquo; says Paul, &ldquo;We wanted the bees to look horny, the butterflies seductive, the flies dominated and the Venus flytraps alluring.&quot;The Homespun editor was on set for the whole shoot.&nbsp;&quot;It was a delicate and intriguing process to capture the film we needed to make the edit. To ensure the insects didn&rsquo;t keep flying around too fast, they were contained in a chilled environment before filming which gave them that undulating slow kinesis we wanted when exposed to room temperature.&rdquo;For Doff, it was very important for all the footage to be genuine.&nbsp;&quot;It was really important to me that all the insect footage was all real so that the video was an amazing example of how audio changes a film,&quot; he says. &quot;With piano music and David Attenborough narration this could go on TV on a Sunday Afternoon. With Run The Jewels amazing song on the exact same footage is&nbsp;so X-rated people blush watching it.[imgtoken data:1]&quot;However insects are basically emotionless robots and the challenge was to make them perform in a way that was still 100% real but told all the personality and &#39;performance&#39; I wanted. This is where the edit was really like a needle in a haystack for Paul. Literally within an hour of footage of an insect there might be two seconds of an amazing twitch or sidestep that totally elevated the video and sold the emotion. The fact that we really connect and understand what the insects are feeling, be it lust or fear, is a huge testament to Paul&#39;s work on this.&rdquo;

It starts with&nbsp;the suave hero&nbsp;strapped into a lazer beam killing machine, and the bald villain poised to kill him,&nbsp;remote in hand. But&nbsp;Ninian Doff has turned that classic Connery-era Bond scenario&nbsp;on its head&nbsp;for&nbsp;Swedish indie pop band&nbsp;Miike Snow&#39;s Genghis Khan.Suddenly the villain (shall we call him Goldnose?) is foiled from dispatching our hero in a surprising fashion, and&nbsp;to his considerable irritation. Then it turns out that Goldnose&#39;s real enemy is not tied up in his underground&nbsp;lair at all.Having established the premise with production design by Tim Gibson&nbsp;referencing Ken Adam&#39;s massive Bond sets, and a lovely look achieved by DoP Patrick Meller shooting on 35mm, Ninian Doff then gleefully dismantles&nbsp;the classic 007 mythology - with song and dance numbers, good&nbsp;performances (Adam Jones is excellent as the villain), and almost sacriligious&nbsp;plot twists.&nbsp;Frankly, Bond really did need to finally settle down...&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]

Like most self-respecting hip-hop artists, the Migos crew of&nbsp;Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset&nbsp;know how to&nbsp;throw a party. But Ninian Doff has literally added another dimension to their fun, in his video for One Time - commissioned as part of the 2015 YouTube Music Awards.&nbsp;Ninian&#39;s video has them waking up in a gloriously lofty&nbsp;villa in a&nbsp;post-party daze, and then realising they&#39;re seeing a visible echo of the previous night&#39;s antics - and they&#39;re now operating in the fourth&nbsp;dimension. Taking&nbsp;a tour&nbsp;of&nbsp;the house means leaving&nbsp;a trail behind them as they&nbsp;show off the bling, the gorgeous house&nbsp;and&nbsp;the outdoor pool.&nbsp;It makes for a visual feast, showcasing clever&nbsp;VFX&nbsp;cut-out&nbsp;techniques executed at&nbsp;Finish in London &ndash; and&nbsp;a very entertaining video.&nbsp;

Ninian Doff&#39;s dramatic and claustrophobic video for Kasabian&#39;s Stevie translates the song&#39;s lyrics &ndash; addressed to a potential killer &ndash;&nbsp;into a futuristic&nbsp;scenario about&nbsp;the creation through relentless conditioning&nbsp;of an indestructible&nbsp;human. And you sense that it&#39;s not for altruistic&nbsp;reasons.&nbsp;Masked&nbsp;scientists experiment on a young boy, who knows nothing else but the dark, starkly-lit room where he goes through a grinding daily routine &ndash; and becomes impervious to pain. But ultimately the boy shows he&#39;s not simply a completely programmable machine, in a video which grips the viewer as it builds suspense - and leaves us wondering if it is actually set in the future.And as with his videos this year for Peace and Royal Blood it shows that Ninian - nominated for Best Director at the UKMVAs next month - is getting as good with serious cinematic narratives as he has always been&nbsp;with VFX- and comedy-driven videos.&nbsp;&nbsp;
