Simon Owens directs an unconventional love story for London-based electronic duo Technology + Teamwork.&nbsp;And if you've never seen a love story between two trashbags, you're in for a treat...Owens' idea is essentially a simple one, executed to perfection:&nbsp;a pair of red plastic bin bags lipsyncing convincingly to&nbsp;what the director describes as "a horror version banger of an Eastern European Eurovision pop song."Shot in a realistic, 'warts and all' way - with the bin bags situated in all the places you would usually find them -&nbsp;the visual feels gritty yet charming, and strangely fitting to the track."On first listen I genuinely found the opening vocal shocking," says Owens."It could be a pitched-down Taylor Dayne&nbsp;singing a Hall and Oates&nbsp;tune over Belgian Techno. The Civil Wars "The One That Got Away"

Reflecting her fascination with North Africa and her partly Algerian heritage, Institute For Eyes (Luke Seomore and Joseph Bull) travelled to Casablanca in Morocco with young singer Yadi to shoot the video for The Blow - with a combination of regular collaborators and local crew.
The result is an absorbing snapshot of real life in this beautiful city - given a more dramatic edge in the alternate cut for the Joe Goddard remix of The Blow.

Every January, in the village of San Bartholme De Pinares in Spain, the locals participate in a 500 year old Christo-Pagan ritual of purification by fire and smoke. This involves "cleansing" horses and their riders (of all ages) as they pass through burning pine brush. This has evolved from a purification ceremony around the time of the Great Plague.

Tom and Steve spent a week filming in and around the cobblestoned village, interviewing residents in the build up to the festivities. "I think they fully believe in the purification element," Tom told Nowness. "Pregnant women jump with horses through fire, guys clutching six-month-old babies. That aspect of it certainly is fundamental." 
Using grainy 16mm film, Luminarias portrays the drama, confusion and traditions of the event in a painterly, expressive way, while the multi-layered collage of sound design and music and text render the drama of the fiesta.

On the second floor of Cambridge University&#39;s Department of Engineering, behind a vast array of home made speakers and Seventies-era hi-fi equipment, sits a rarely-used container-sized room called the Anechoic Chamber - a room designed to create total silence.
On visiting an Anechoic Chamber, John Cage entered expecting to hear silence, but he wrote later: &quot;I heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation.&quot; True silence is impossible.
Ruhal Ahmed, a former detainee at Guantanamo Bay, has a special relationship to silence. For a period of two and a half years, he was repeatedly questioned by military staff at the Cuban base, where his interrogators would often play music to him repeatedly at high volume. This short film by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin - one of a number made to accompany the new Massive Attack album Heligoland, and featuring the track Saturday Comes Slow - is a meditation on Ruhal Ahmed&#39;s experience in Guantanemo.
It is also about the use of sound on the human body, for both pleasure and pain - as sound expert Michael Furman also explains in this absorbing film, at different points illuminating, beautiful and disturbing.

Massive Attack’s Saturday Comes Slow by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin 

The latest in the ongoing project of films inspired by tracks from Massive Attack's new album Heligoland is this intimate portrait of a Birmingham gang member, by photographer/filmmaker Ewen Spencer.
Ewen is well known for his photography with The Streets and The White Stripes, numerous magazines and commercial clients (T-Mobile, Foot Locker, etc). And as he shows here for the haunting and intense Flat Of The Blade - with vocals by Elbow's Guy Garvey - he's also chronicler par excellence of modern youth sub-culture.

Massive Attack’s Flat Of The Blade by Ewen Spencer

Noah And The Whale's frontman Charlie Fink not only directed this imaginative film for the band's new single, but also wrote the script and did all the music. The promo is an excerpt from a 50 minute film that accompany's the new album The First Days Of Spring, which was premiered at the Lattitude festival earlier this month. The film will be a bonus dvd as part of the deluxe edition of the album. With a budget of £30,000, the shoot took place in London, Surrey and the beaches of West Wittering.

There's no music at all, just Tiga acting like the Cristiano Ronaldo of dance music (narcissistic, annoying, talented, ridiculous) in an in-depth TV interview with a po-faced chat show host.
Tiga wrote it, Simon directed it. It's strange, and very funny. Hats off to these guys. It's actually up there with the wonderful <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/04/21/tiga%e2%80%99s-shoes-by-alexandliane/">Shoes</a>.

"I'd been speaking with Tiga and Oliver, his manager of international business affairs, for some time (since back when I was with Shazam in their Westbourne Grove office, and eating at Little and Large's Deli for lunch).
"After Oliver and his business partner Ryan had hooked up with the lord of music videos John Moule, to talk music videos and how great street art is, my name came up!
"Apparently they all wanted a live séance, as John believes in the spiritual arts of the extremely talented. We all then hooked up after a window arose for a conference call and discussed my genitals. After telling them how happy I was, they decided to let me in on a secret. Tiga can write scripts, and I have this thing! You know the thing! And can make things look good, and have excellent genitalia, I got the gig.
"It was excellent. We ended up in Brick Lane throwing bagels around, pretending we loved everyone, and generally high rolling on the 149 bus. Can I also do some shout outs Shout outs to Richard Hansen he did an AMAZING job! BJ you're the best!!"

The first single from White Denim's second album - out on 22 June - is Tom Haines' second video for the band, following the outstanding <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2008/09/08/white-denim%e2%80%99s-shake-shake-shake-by-tom-haines/">Shake Shake Shake</a>.
I Start To Run is just as exuberant as Shake, just as superbly shot by Steve Annis, and featuring a gang of shotgun-wielding inbred crazies holding the band hostage, it's at least twice as demented. Well, it was shot in Wales.

Doves' return to action is backed by an evocative north of England road movie by the highly regarded young filmmaker China Moo-Young, where the reasons for a young man's journey across the bleak, beautiful Pennines in a pristine 1978 Ford Granada only becomes clear when he reaches Blackpool.
It's China's second video since she signed to Warp Films for music videos - her first was another impressive northern tale for <a href="">Keith's Lullaby</a>.
China's 2007 short film Juvenile gained official selection at Edinburgh, Sundance and Berlin film festivals, and last year she directed Emo, a one-off drama for C4's Coming Up New Talent scheme. She was also named a 'star of tomorrow' in Screen International's annual review of British filmmaking talent.

Tremendously good video for the rockin' Texan boys White Denim by Tom Haines - with the band in a Bermondsey junkyard, replete with groovy dancers, erotic car-washing by a big lady, and a dangerous child named Stanley.
Loads of fun and very cool, nearly everyone on screen with the band makes an impression - including the owners of the yard. Tom has done a great job and, as he acknowledges below, revived the loose narrative feel of his early videos like Tunng's Jenny Again.
Like that Tunng video and Tom's others, this was shot by Steve Annis and it looks bloody marvellous - possibly the best advert for shooting on film I've seen this year. Would it look this good on tape On a Red You know the answer.

"It was back to basics for me. Shooting on film - it was shot on Super 16mm - with me and my DP Steve Annis running around making up shots on the day.
"It's going back to the naturalism of my early videos, like Tunng's Jenny Again, combined with what I've learnt since. And it's such a great balls-out song. I love White Denim.
"I wanted to have a Mad Max-type of setting, and another influence was the movie <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262432/">George Washington by David Gordon Green</a>, which has feral kids in an almost-but-not-quite post-apocalyptic environment. That's what I wanted - and you have to see what you can get don't you
"We chose the first place we looked at. It's in south London, and it wasn't very big, but the guys who run it - and who are also in the video - were very easy-going, and when you're in a location like that you need to have people on your side.
"I was at Framestore doing the online, and Mike Woods, who I've worked with a lot over there, came in to have a look at the footage. All he could say was 'look at those cars, those Beemers - what a waste!' I was asking him how he liked the video. He just wanted to know where I shot it.
"We didn't have that much time with Stanley, the boy. We were only allowed to have him for a few hours so he only came around about four o'clock. It was all pretty quick. I wanted him to have some interaction with a family of very tame foxes who lived next to the yard. But they were freaked out - by the noise of the band more than anything.
"We had all kinds of dancers doing street and crunk in the casting. But the guy in the check suit in the video he's pretty special. He reminded me of a sot fo Shane meadows character and he took it mega-seriously. He came in and asked to hear the track and eeach time he stomped around exactly the same way.
"I think we got lucky - everyone had the right attitude and they looked great."
