Canadian alternative artist Debby Friday explores the idea of the male gaze, and subverting it in sensational fashion, in the video for What A Man, co-directed by Friday and Kevan Funk.Friday plays auditioning actress, poledancer and artist's model, in each scenario becoming objectified by male viewers, yet finally getting the upper hand. As a counterpoint, Friday and Funk also&nbsp;recreate&nbsp;a classical painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the few female artists of the Baroque,&nbsp;for reasons that Friday explains below.[imgtoken data:1]“The WHAT A MAN&nbsp;music video is loosely based on the famous essay, Ways of Seeing, by English art critic John Berger as well as paintings by the Italian Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi - in particular, her iconic work Judith Slaying Holofernes," explains Friday. "In 1972, Berger released Ways of Seeing&nbsp;as both a television series via the BBC and a book. Both the series and the text function as image-based explorations of the depiction of women in Western art and culture. This work has been massively influential in cultural theory, as it introduced the concept of 'the male gaze'. "Gentileschi is distinctive for being one of the only female professional artists of her era. Her paintings draw from myths and Biblical stories and almost always feature women as protagonists and equals to men. Arguably her most famous work, Judith Slaying Holofernes, is thought to be a self-portrait that depicts her as Judith slaying a Holofernes who resembles Agostino Tassi, a man who raped her when she was 17. "Both the essay and the paintings served as frameworks for the video. The same way that Gentileschi painted herself into images of other women is the same way I feel that every woman can see ourselves in much of Gentileschi’s story and her work. To be a woman and an artist in this world is to be, in a way, a shapeshifter. You take on the shape of whatever and whoever is looking at you - whether that be a camera, a phone, a lover, a thief, a killer. Always and all at once, you are a spectacle, a flower, a treasure, a ditch, a bitch, a miracle. “When I look at Artemisia’s paintings, I feel myself transported and transformed into the emotional field of Judith, of Jael, of Susanna. Her hand is my hand, her sword is my sword, her pain is my pain. I have always identified with women who were wild and brazen - survivors, people who exist and persist despite. I have always looked up to women who were willing to be ‘bad’ in the name of living thoroughly.”

Sammy Rawal directs voguing diva&nbsp;Honey Balenciaga, as a magical chef, creating wonders in the kitchen,&nbsp;in this branded music video for the Kelis-performed&nbsp;Square It - part of a new campaign by&nbsp;leading cheese brand Kraft Singles.In this fast-paced mash-up of voguing and cookery, Honey - star of the HBO reality show Legendary - self-multiplies to make herself as super-creative as possible, while also making impressive moves&nbsp;to the track which was created in a team up with ad agency Johannes Leonardo and maverick singer-songwriter and foodie Kelis.This is described as part of a companywide 'anti-advertising' effort by Kraft Heinz, as a way to modernise its brands, and also a way to celebrate the growth of the Kraft Singles brand during the pandemic - it registered double digit growth for the first time in five years. In preparing to make the video for Square It, Rawal pitched his idea - including&nbsp;the casting of Honey Balenciaga&nbsp;- to the creative team at Johannes Leonardo.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“From the first briefing, I was in love with the idea and I really vibed with the JL creatives—we shared a lot of references," says Rawal.&nbsp;“My vision was to cast the legendary voguing diva herself, Honey Balenciaga, in an absurd story about a cook hard at work who transforms into a culinary Goddess capable of telekinesis and multiplying herself on command."That everyone embraced my pitch for the video to star a queer talent for a campaign totally unrelated to Pride was incredibly refreshing."

Dan from Bastille battles the outside world in Another Place, directed by&nbsp;Anna Radchenko &amp; Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux.&nbsp;In an avant-garde bedroom set, Dan is sat with sand pouring from his hands, lonely and isolated. The huge windows behind him offer a glimpse into the outside world, but he isn't interested. Alessia appears outside, like&nbsp;a giant looking through a dollhouse, and taps the glass. This sends a shockwave through the environment, which starts to deteriorate and spill black blood from its walls. Dan is thrown into action, trying to keep a sense of calm whilst the outside world is trying to break him out of his bubble.&nbsp;Unique and inspired, the German Expressionist references and design elevate the concept, and Dan's&nbsp;performance as a man losing his sanctuary is breathtaking.Great work across the board on the video shot in Toronto, with the heavily pregnant Radchenko directing remotely&nbsp;from London, and&nbsp;Schaulin-Rioux on set.&nbsp;

Toronto-based&nbsp;Odonis Odonis&nbsp;have released this dark and dystopian visual for their track Needs, directed&nbsp;by&nbsp;Scott Cudmore, which&nbsp;is&nbsp;equal parts&nbsp;gripping, thought-provoking and&nbsp;unsettling.Driven forward by destructive and&nbsp;libidinous forces&nbsp;but with no formal narrative structure, the clip is made up of striking&nbsp;glimpses into lurid&nbsp;scenarios, with plenty of creeping&nbsp;zooms into the grimacing faces of&nbsp;powerful white men. &nbsp;Scott explains, &quot;&ldquo;For me, this is a video about oppression, objectification, commodification - old, entitled white men. It&rsquo;s about them and the system of oppression and exploitation that they&rsquo;ve created to serve their, well&hellip; needs.&quot;&quot;I&rsquo;m looking at this through the lens of science fiction but I wanted to depict that power structure breaking down. Breaking down internally. There&rsquo;s clearly no linear narrative and you are free to think of that aspect in any way that you want, but each image is a depiction of this breakdown and of repression, exploitation and finally, desperation.&quot;

It&#39;s an audacious&nbsp;experiment that really comes off.
