Mystery Jets 'Someone Purer' by Jack King

Jack King has made no less than four videos for To Kill A King's new EP My Crooked Saint - one for each track - that both stand alone but also work together. Set over the course of one day, on one suburban estate in Yorkshire. The central running theme concerns a select group of lost-souls who live on the same street; whose individual sensibilities and perceptions about themselves, others around them and the estate they live on lead them to each create their own unique realities.

"I think with some of the band and myself being from Yorkshire meant that when we get enough money for one good video, we must make four videos with it, one for every song on the EP - and they all must be different, like four stand-alone music videos, but which also you could put together to make a 20-min short film. So myself and Ralph [the singer] set about writing something halfway between his brief and my pitch, and about a week later we were all on estate with the gypsies and their horses, having breakfast in the nephew of famous dead playwright Andrea Dunbar's house, sat at a table looking through the 30-plus page shot-list... 
"The next four days are sort of a blur but I owe it to all the amazing, talented and generous people involved that we got it done. We were basically shooting rehearsals in some parts, and doing most things in only one take, so I felt incredibly lucky with the actors we had who just kept nailing it, as well as an awesome camera team who got pretty much everything right first time, and Karl and Steph who kept me sane in all the chaos. 
"The whole thing just felt like a mad puzzle, as we were shooting scenes from two separate or even three separate videos all next to each other, so it was a nightmare trying to keep track of continuity and story. I can't wait to do just one video."

There really is something surreal going on in Yorkshire."Dean's (Hourglass sea) music is probably the thing that's excited me most out of anything coming out of Bradford recently, so i wanted to do that justice by doing something big with a small budget - which amongst other things meant doing things like getting vans and cars of people and kit and restaurant tables down a quarry crack of dawn on a saturday so no-one would see us," Jack explains."Unsurprisingly we got caught on pretty much all occasions but thankfully we managed to convince the owners and police we weren't quad-biking or dogging or stealing things we had no idea were actually worth money. We had the most amazing cast and crew and understanding locals so pretty much everything else went like a dream and we wrapped on time and to budget, even if we shaved 20 years of our lives doing it."

His video for To Kill A King&rsquo;s&nbsp;Cold Skin&nbsp;was his first shown here. Now Jack King&rsquo;s first video at Run Productions is the Yorkshire band&rsquo;s Fictional State &ndash; their first release since signing to Virgin Records. And it&rsquo;s nothing less than a sprawling, decidedly non-linear epic of family life, involving love, hate and quite possibly attempted murder, all set in one home.&ldquo;I&rsquo;d been listening to an old demo of the track for over a year before they got signed, so I was pretty elated to get asked to make the video for it,&rdquo; says Jack. &ldquo;The band wanted the video shot up north, so we shot it in a house in Bradford that had been empty for 23 years &ndash; home only to the occasional glue enthusiast.&ldquo;We had a great mix of talented crew from the north and south, and it was the first time I&rsquo;d not suffered heart problems so it clearly worked! I loved how everyone mucked in and grafted solidly for two days, especially how half the crew went behind the call of duty and played roles in the video which I feel a bit bad about but I&rsquo;m sure they enjoyed it really.&ldquo;Elliot, the 1st AD and producer played the director when scheduling changes meant the actor penned in couldn&rsquo;t make it, Anna the art director played the midwife, Ralph&rsquo;s (singer) dad played the priest, and the audience at the end was all of us.&ldquo;It was weird because that was also the last scene we filmed &ndash; it was a surreal, multi-layered, self &ndash; fulfilling thing that was really symbolic to me because of what the whole thing is about.&rdquo;- See more at: http://www.promonews.tv/2011/04/27/to-kill-a-king%e2%80%99s-fictional-state-by-jack-king/#sthash.jkubnKHu.dpuf

Jack King came to Promo's attention halfway through last year with his impressive and intriguing video for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/07/05/to-kill-a-king%E2%80%99s-cold-skin-by-jack-king/" target="_blank">To Kill A King</a>, which included sections shot in a vast cooling tower outside Bradford.
That, it turns out, was just for starters. Now he's teamed up with Matt Green to form JakOMat, and the fruit of their strenuous labours over the past few months is this off-the-wall tour de force of eye-bulging imagery and vein-poppingly visceral SFX. 
The story is nuts, but then JakOMat's have just let their imaginations run rampant, and then backed it up with lots of skill and dedication, and lots of good help. More proof that exciting and distinctive videomaking is now happening outside of London. Including Yorkshire.

"In a nutshell the film is about a man that wakes up trapped in a dark reality, and finds that the only way to escape is to reconstruct it, and then seduce its enforcer before spraying him emphatically with a ton of of his own juices... which in other words means we want people to make of it what they will! 
"But essentially it could be an archetypal story of a man trying to escape a reality he doesn't really feel at home in - something familiar to anyone who spends more than a healthy amount of time dwelling on the confines of their own middling existence (like us). 

"We both agreed it was important never to take ourselves too seriously - there are certain things we both wanted to say with it, but we can't over-ride the fact its just what happens when you've spent too much time playing computer games and watching japanese body horror, and you get hold of a thumping progressive sound track and a couple of credit cards!"

Enigmatic, visually striking and utterly absorbing, this is a very impressive piece by Jack King for unsigned band To Kill A King (no relation), casting a bunch of kids and frightening-looking big blokes and marshalling them into a bout of cathartic violence.&quot;The video is about facing your nightmares, in a nutshell, which was my interpretation of the song - which is about a hypothetical atomic bomb,&quot; says Jack, who shot it with local kids in and around Holme Wood and Frizinghall in West Yorkshire.And he shot in some good locations - like the inside of a huge cooling tower.
