Dan French recreates the early 70s pop promo for Elton John's Step Into Christmas, and then imagines the almighty&nbsp;chaos that occured behind the scenes on the shoot&nbsp;- with the 1973 Elton played by actress and model Cara Delevingne.The hugely entertaining&nbsp;video&nbsp;reproduces shots from Elton's studio performance in the original visual - featuring&nbsp; Delevingne&nbsp;as an uncanny facsmile of glam-era Elton, plus doppelgangers of his band - while adding the story of the production team frantically attempting to add some festive flavour to proceedings.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Despite the addition of a festive feather boa, balloons and confetti, chaos reigns as they wrangle an escaped turkey, fail to book a real reindeer (and find a donkey instead) and tackle a deranged fan who storms the set, all whilst Delevingne mirrors Elton’s choicest dance moves and iconic facial expressions from the original promo.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On it's release over 50 years ago, Step Into Christmas failed to trouble the UK Top 20, but it's stepped up in seasonal stature in recent years. The song has charted&nbsp;each December since 2011, and last year it was certified Triple Platinum, 50 years after its release. I go to a lot of gigs, but there have been two standouts this year. Firstly,&nbsp;the Japanese avant-garde-metal-rock-jazz band called Sigh in Hackney recently. It was such surprisingly wholesome fun, they even had their little kids singing backing vocals on stage with them.Another incredible gig was getting to see one of my fave Dublin artists Lankum perform their full album False Lankum with some Irish friends. A reviewer has described their performances as being more of an exorcism than a gig and that is a better description than I can think of. They build such an overwhelming wall of sound layered and layered onto itself, it’s just extraordinary live.[imgtoken data:1]Name a film or video or other creative work that had a huge influence on your career choice?Music videos will always have such a special place in my heart. I was obsessed with them as a kid and I’d spend hours and hours obsessively watching MTV in my Nan’s house.Those late 90s and early 2000s videos are still so iconic. The cinematography, the sets, the choreo, the edits are just insane. Missy Elliot, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Yeah&nbsp;Yeah&nbsp;Yeahs, Ludacris, Outkast, Lady Gaga... just so good!![vidtoken data:1]I also got really into Kpop/Jpop videos. They have such interesting imagery and still have a lot of that similar hyperpop 2000s energy to them. Artists like Super Junior, Girls Generation were amazing, and those early BlackPink videos always had crazy good editing/cinematography/choreo.And now with artists like Lisa, Babymonster, Jesse, Chanmina and Le Sserafim, who are still consistently releasing such fun, conceptual and technically stunning videos.&nbsp;&nbsp;In terms of the music video-related jobs of the past year or so, what were the most rewarding creatively, and why?I adored working on Andrex - Do You Really Like It? directed by Chloe Victoria Hughes. It is such a fun concept, mixing the commercial with music video (and the Pied Piper remix is hilarious). It was such a creatively fun job to be a part of. Chloe always has such a strong vision on all of her projects. The edits on her job are always such a delight, and she is such a powerhouse, that she makes everything - even toilet jokes - look stunning.[vidtoken data:2]Equally, I had a wonderful time working on Ella Eyre's Ain’t No Love That&nbsp;Blind directed by Dora Paphides. Dora is such an amazing talent, she knows exactly what she wants and it's always such a delightful creative collaboration with her in the room. Ben Galster directs a sensual and, well, irrepressible depiction of queer life and love&nbsp;for The Irrepressibles. And it's proved to be too hot for&nbsp;YouTube...&nbsp;The video for Ecstasy Homosexuality is a celebration of queer liberation, featuring a stirring narrative between former and current lovers, who get away together in a house in the country for a summer break.&nbsp;Blending&nbsp;queer culture, performance and art into something absolutely captivating, the video makes use of mixed media (live action, paintings and vintage photography) to give a universal, anachronistic feel to the concept.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]The central narrative between the main characters is also hugely engaging, teetering on the edge of something explosive and visceral, even in moments of silence.&nbsp;Jumping between naturalistic, raw setups and hyper-stylised vignettes, Galster's direction feels elevated and inspired throughout, capturing unique sides of the LGBT+ experience with flair.&nbsp;It's stunning work, and although it has been&nbsp;taken down from YouTube, it's still available in its full glory on Vimeo...&nbsp;

Sports Team return with a video directed by Dora Paphides made in the spirit of pop promos from the 1970s and '80s.The single I'm In Love (Subaru) marks a change in a musical direction for the erstwhile indie-rock outfit to an 80s-tinged pop-soul sound - replete with Spandau Ballet-style saxophone. The studio-set video duly pays homage to the period, with vocalist Alex Rice centre-stage amid his ST bandmates and a crucial prop - an era-appropriate&nbsp;Subaru car.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The video plays with light and shadow to recreate the look of videos of the times, whilst elevating certain aspects to modern day standards."Working closely with the band, and [DoP] Tasha Duursma, we looked at a lot of Roxy Music vids and Spandau Ballet," reveals Paphides.&nbsp;"We wanted to make a homage to music videos of this era - from artists who may have been inspired by the Blitz club - but with some punchier, editorial, contemporary details."It needed to be part-editorial, part-music promo. [And] it was essential for us to shoot this with the types of grip/rigs that would’ve existed at the time for a real sense of authenticity."

Dora Paphides shows again that she's a young director with a real talent for this pop video directing game with a pulsating promo for Ella Eyre.The video for Ain't No Love That Blind - Paphides' second for Ella Eyre - is a fully focussed showcase&nbsp;of Eyre's talents as a singer and performer - the song recalling her vocal contributions to those early Rudimental tracks - and everything comes together to showstopping effect. Paphides and the production team provide Ella with a platform to display her tigerish personality, with terrific camerawork and styling,&nbsp;and an&nbsp;intriguing 'car cemetery' location.And perhaps most notably of all, the feisty performance is abetted by an utterly fearsome edit by Sara Faulkner. LOOSE follows up the superb live visual for Fred Again..'s collab with Lil Yachty with an equally impressive document of the producer's encounter with Anderson .Paak for Places To Be.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This intimate and intense jam session was shot in one take in sun-soaked Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, and there is a delightful sense of capturing magic in a bottle, as both artists do their stuff.&nbsp;With the pair enthusiastically jumping between instruments - including two drumkits - it's a brilliant job of camerawork throughout. And then the&nbsp;natural magic in the room is elevated further when its revealed that Anderson's drumkit is on a platform that rotates, and he performs a 360˚&nbsp;drum solo.[imgtoken data:1]

They have been making great videos for decades, and arguably&nbsp;the greatest music video band of all time. No pressure then, for Rich Hall, to direct a worthy addition to the great canon of work for Depeche Mode. But he has risen to the challenge.For People Are Good, the latest single from the latest album Memento Mori, the Riff Raff Films-based director&nbsp;has faced down the weight of 40-plus years of Depeche Mode music video history, with a promo which nods to the visual style that has become their hallmark, while establishing its own heartfelt identity.Combining stylishness, brilliant film craft with a considered&nbsp;exposition of the theme of the song, Hall has created a series of intensely dramatic vignettes, shot in black and white by DoP Martin Ruhe, in a heightened cinematic, dreamlike reality.[imgtoken data:1]In each one we are confronted with a seeming act&nbsp;of wrongdoing or human frailty - expressed in the human pile-up of a riot, a woman digging a grave, a confrontation of&nbsp;macho gang bosses, and so on - each taking palce in front of a white wall. It's a counterpoint to Dave Gahan's somewhat ambivalent vocals for People Are Good.&nbsp;The video&nbsp;is evocative and bold, exploring the complex nature of human beings in a unique and distinctive way. Tom Patrick Coley helms an intense comedy-horror&nbsp;for London-based Texan songwriter Anna Roenigk - aka Born Again Virgin - set at an awards ceremony for a salespeople of a pyramid scheme&nbsp;in the mid-Nineties, where things take a dark turn indeed.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the video for Bird of Prey,&nbsp;Roenigk plays a charismatic yet obnoxious host, presenting the awards to a pool of overenthusiastic salespeople.
