It's homage galore in the new video for Antisocial, directed by Dave Meyers, and if you've ever wanted to see Ed Sheeran in Day of the Dead makeup, your dreams have just come true.Shot in a series of short, self-contained vignettes, there are references to Pulp Fiction, Edward Scissorhands, The Mask,&nbsp;and even Björk's Army Of Me -&nbsp;featuring a very Gondry-esque dentist scene. And somehow it all works together.The video is completely batshit crazy, and most importantly, unforgettable. There are very few artists who could be this comfortable and confident being so goofy, and Meyers does an outstanding job with Sheeran and Scott, never letting either of them lose whichever quirky character they are playing.&nbsp;

Paul Gore&#39;s second video for Paloma Faith - in a three-part series for Paloma&#39;s album A Perfect Contradiction - is more focussed than his previous multi-narrative effort for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2014/01/17/paloma-faith-cant-rely-you-paul-gore" target="_blank">Can&#39;t Rely On You</a>, and more powerful. In fact,&nbsp;this is a tremendous&nbsp;pop promo.&nbsp;Shot by Dan Landin, a DoP who began his career shooting some of the best music videos in the 1990s, Only Love Can Hurt Like This looks stunning from the start. The performance and dramatic set-ups are beautifully composed - but then it just gets better.When Paloma plunges into the pool, prepare for no ordinary underwater sequence. Her passionate performance continues unabated. The effect is gobsmacking, and the video enters its epic phase. It feels even more&nbsp;like a pop promo production of the old school - helmed superbly by Paul Gore, a director with the talent and experience to make it happen.&nbsp;When you see videos like this, you realise what we&#39;ve been missing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Paloma Faith 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' by Paul Gore

A music video-cum-ad from Kim Gehrig that revives Jona Lewie's new wave cult hit, and will undoubtedly sell lots of IKEA kitchens too.
Like the <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/10/22/professor-greendoritos-late-campaign-by-chris-cairns/" target="_blank">Pro Green/Doritos</a> tie-in, this uses technology with YouTube reliability to enhance the viewer experience. In the full version you roll your mouse over the props and it tells you what they are. Click on it and you go to another page showing the product and cost (then return to where you were in the vid).
Crucially, this genuinely works as both an ad and a video. Shot in Romania over two days, to complete the task of completing both three minute and 60 second versions, Gregg Shoulder's superb set design was all shot in-camera by Florian Hoffmeister.
Loads of fun. Jona Lewie's in the video and ad too, looking very cheerful. Well you would be wouldn't you

The fans filmed the Noisettes playing in a disused swimming pool in East London - each one with a Nokia - and in effect became both the cast and crew. 
Now anyone can make their own version of the video from footage that was shot at the Noisettes/Nokia <a href="http://www.shotbyfans.com/" target="_blank">shotbyfans</a> website. Nice little editing exercise. 
And the <a href="http://www.shotbyfans.com/#project" target="_blank">EPK/Making Of</a> also explains the whole project.

Paul Gore's first video in ages is a pop vid par excellence for The Noisettes' Sixties-ish pop. It's stylish and cinematic. The gracefully derelict dancehall at Alexandra Palace makes for a lovely location for the performance parts, and it's beautifully shot by Rob Hardy. Nice car too.

With a bagful of ideas and some sexy glamour, Nima gives Franz some of that Hot Chip vibe and turns the band's performance into a multi-faceted art installation.
To be enjoyed over several viewings - not least for another excellent edit for Nima by Dan Sherwin at Final Cut, who presumably had to wade through a ton of 'dancer-cam' footage.
But then, an interactive version for the punters to edit themselves wouldn't be such a bad idea either, would it

At times like these it's good to see those wonderful folks in the City putting on a brave face and having some fun.
Wiley's team up with Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather for Cash In My Pocket sees Kim Gehrig taking up the reins once again, after the somewhat controversial promo for Wearing My Rolex. Wiley isn't in this one either - but this time it's a conscious decision by Kim, who taps into the zeitgeist in the way that the rather subversive Wiley virals have.
And despite the cheap video style, there's something classically Hollywood musical and escapist about it.
A bit like what happened in the last Great Depression...

"When I got the Wiley track in, I knew that this time I had to make a video where Wiley deliberately wasn't in it. The track seemed so apt for this crazy moment in the financial world and I wanted to do something that played with that.
"I had become aware of office lip dub videos and think they're quite ingenious. It seemed like the perfect track to get bankers to sing. The idea was to make the video feel as if the bankers made it themselves - how they would create a video and perform a rap, and make silly officey jokes."[/pay]

Poor old Lily Cole. She and several of her lovely model pals are being imaginatively despatched by some cruel maniac who might well possibly be George Michael.
Sorry, I mean Bobby Gillespie - even though Kim Gehrig's highly enjoyable lurid romp could easily be interpreted (by me) as a wonderfully perverted distortion of George's famous yet unspeakably boring model-fest video for Freedom all those years ago.
However, as Kim explains below, it was really inspired by Italian horror movies.[pay]

"When I was researching this video I spent an entire weekend locked up in my flat watching Italian horror movies. I was home alone and by Sunday night I was so completely freaked out, I couldn't even go to the shop for milk, and had to drink black coffee...
"Bobby was so great to work with. He really got into the idea - although he was pretty keen to be the one to kill the girls himself, and it took a little while to talk him round!
"Bobby is very original in the way he performs and incredibly compelling to watch. The idea of the coloured light corridor was to give him an unusual stage on which to perform. I wanted him to be the central force in the video, and for it to feel like he was almost willing the deaths.
"Katy England styled the video and we went for a subtle 70's vibe. We managed to get great models to star in the deaths - Lily Cole, Alice Dellal, Rosemary Fergusson and Kiera Gormley. Very easy on the eye, and by the way big up the fabulous hair and make-up team of Petros Petrohilos and Eamonn Hughes.
"We shot the video in this really fucked up location; it used to be a training school for monks and while I'm not normally superstitious, it was quite creepy to see all these rooms with the shape of faded crosses on the walls. They also train police dogs there as well, so you never knew what might happen as you walked around the corner...
"The final image of each death was really important. I wanted each one to be almost like the murderer was an artist creating images. I think Lily's chandelier hat is my favourite.
"Tom Townend and I got into the 'giallo' mood with the colourful lighting. We wanted to use strong colours, a bit psychedelic without it becoming too sickly. The art direction, by Gregg Shoulder, also had that retro feel. The most difficult thing was probably constructing the rig for the chandelier to land on Lily's head."[/pay]

Primal Scream’s Can’t Go Back by Kim Gehrig

Roisin Murphy is no ordinary pop star, and pop is really the opposite of what Jaron Albertin does. He is, after all, the master of weirdness and creeping disquiet. We're talking about his marvellous videos for Emily Haines, Junior Boys, Death From Above, Circlesquare, Dave Gahan and more...
But Jaron's video for Roisin's You Know It Better does work as a pop promo. It's glamorous and commercial - but unsurprisingly there is something else going on here too, underneath.
Roisin plays different characters - or rather different incarnations of herself, in different guises. On one level this is a woman struggling to establish an identity, and/or choosing to lose her real one in her varying looks. On another level it is eye candy, a fashion show.
"The idea of Roisin playing different characters came from the song, which is saying her partner knows her better than she knows herself," explains Jaron. "The biggest reference was Cindy Sherman, in particular her book Centrefolds, which we referenced for the look we wanted. But I'd say it was inspired by rather than a recreation of Sherman. We didn't dive really deep into character development.

But a third person besides Roisin and Jaron was absolutely crucial to realising this project, and fulfilling that 'looking good' requirement: stylist Claire Edmondson. Claire's previous credits include Feist's 1234 - the now-iconic blue spangly trouser suit worn by Leslie Feist in the video was her's - but this is something else. She built up a strong rapport with Roisin making this video, and with its combination of high fashion and vintage, this is styling to make the fashionistas swoon.
The location is also hugely important. Shot at an ordinary suburban home in Snaresbrook, with a considerable amount of retro features and décor, the house is Roisin's playground in the video, but it also confines her. There's a real sense of claustrophobia. "We chose the house because we were looking for something normal, but which added something to it," says Jaron. "I guess it has an American Fifties feel but its not - there's a bit of modern British in there too."
 But he also reveals that after the shoot the video moved away from its originally-planned narrative structure. "There's hardly any lipsync in the original cut," he says, "And I do like the first cut we did. But it really didn't reference the song well enough - and it is a pop song after all. To be honest it was hard to grab emotion from what we had.
"Ultimately it needed a more conventional edit: the more we cut it, the more it moved in that direction, and we ended up changing the editor. I've never done a re-edit before and let my editor go, But I think its better as a video.
"Roisin knows her stuff. But it's almost like a tug and pull. She wants to do a creative thing, but the songs drive you to the pop side and it was the way the video had to go." However, Jaron Albertin has still made a pop video with a psychological undercurrent - to be enjoyed best over repeated viewings.

"Roisin is really inspiring, she brings so much to the table. Usually at a fitting you pull out things and everyone gets really scared. But I'd show Roisin something and she'd say 'yeah its amazing, and what about this' She was embracing everything I had and wanting to push it further.
"It was one of those projects which kept morphing as it went along. Cindy Sherman was definitely one of the references, but although Cindy Sherman's book Centrefolds is very character-driven Roisin is very fashion-driven. We had to do a take on that but bring it into a fashion world.
"Basically she really liked the Louis Vuitton spring/summer collection, so we had some of the pieces from the collection. It was a lot of pastels, and its slightly old lady-ish actually, but it with a definite modern fashion twist. That's where we started.
"We got really high high end designers to lend clothing, and then I did massive amounts of vintage shopping. It's all high high end designer stuff or vintage - there's no middle high street stuff going on. We had two different fittings because there was so much to do - basically we had a big dress up party and had a good time.
? "The green dress and pink hotpants, that's a vintage look. There were so many costume changes you can't really plan them ahead of time. I just did a massive, massive shop basically and then you start building outfits from there. That green dress I knew would be great somewhere, I just didn't know in what context, but it would end up in the video. And it turned out to be a really strong look, I really like that one. And the ruff again is by a local designer.
? "In the hallway when she comes out in a yellow and gold dress and a giant tuille bow on her head (above) - she looks kind of confused. That's Louis Vuitton - and I think that was the only piece we used in the end.
? "I know Jaron was trying to create an old lady look, with her actually looking like an old lady, but I don't think that was really ever going to happen... But he kind of got in the hallway when she has the big ruffle thing on her head. She's wearing an old vintage coat, and we added a big hot pink tuille bustle added to the back of it - you can just make it out in one of the shots - and then a neck ruff that we wrapped around the head.
? "That's a vintage nightdress from the Sixties or Seventies. I think Jaron wanted something that could be like a housecoat while she's lying on the kitchen floor because that was a definite Cindy Sherman reference. But I knew Roisin wouldn't go for a housecoat. It had the blue ruffle around the neck, I knew she'd go for that.
?"We had this vintage dress and realised we could make the shoulders really big - Roisin and I are both really into big shoulders right now and we thought it was fun. Then at the last minute the hairdresser did her hair like that. Then some gold jewellery was added and it became this Alexis Carrington character. We didn't really mean for that, but all of a sudden it was, 'okay, that's good too'...
? "Ruffs are a big fashion item right now. In the last shot of the video where she lands on the couch, she has one. We were basing that on the pierrot-clown look and the ruff came from a local designer called Poltock &amp; Walsh. And that was a vintage jumpsuit with that piece, and then Balenciaga heels. A bit of a mismatch - but it works."
