Declan McKenna is back - and also back&nbsp;with regular collaborator Will Hooper to make a characteristically lighthearted and&nbsp;offbeat video for Sympathy, with Declan on a deserted sandy beach in the company of a piano, a metal detector, and some odd-looking seagulls.&nbsp;Reuniting the creative relationship&nbsp;that brought the brilliant visuals for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/04/16/declan-mckenna-key-life-earth-will-hooper/64352">The Key To Life On Earth</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2020/01/31/declan-mckenna-beautiful-faces-will-hooper/63032">Beautiful Faces</a>, the video features a dreamlike narrative in a breezy beachside setting.&nbsp;Cue puppet seagulls, googly eyed-guitars and a metal detector narrative, all merging to form a trippy, hallucinatory seaside experience.[imgtoken data:1]Most crucially, it's the uplifting presence of Declan McKenna himself - as twinkly-eyed and energetic as he was when he burst onto the music scene a few years ago - but arguably with a bit more knowing&nbsp;maturity. First there was Telephones 4 Eyes, one of the most imaginative videos of the year so far. But it turns out that was just for starters. Here is&nbsp;the main dish, as served up by East London troubadour and top geezer Hak Baker and Irish director Hugh Mulhern. It's the&nbsp;remarkable&nbsp;tour de force that is Doolally.As Baker delivers a blow-by-blow account of a very messy night out - seemingly channelling Mike Skinner in his Streets pomp&nbsp;- Mulhern takes the turbo-charged pace and mix of live action, VFX and AI animation, and up the ante as he interprets this fruity story.&nbsp;It all starts in Hak's tower block flat, where the weirdness soon kicks in with the appearance of his nemesis - a pudgy grass-covered gremlin. When his mates arrive, to get in the party mood, the action turns&nbsp;into a computer game as they speed through London streets to reach their party destination.[imgtoken data:1]Then the mayhem begins, as Mulhern transforms the track's&nbsp;house party into a heaving mass of people in a club, constantly transforming in a way that feels all of a piece with Baker's&nbsp;hallucinogenic state. AI animation takes over - 2D and 3D - in a way that goes further than Telephones but still controlled to meet the vision.&nbsp;Mulhern uses AI&nbsp;so it augments his creativity rather than replacing it.There is a real sense of visiting the recesses of a the human mind in an altered state - when it's gone a bit Doolally. So between the human and&nbsp;artificial intelligence, there is a brilliance at work here.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]“Doolally is a party anthem,"&nbsp;says Hugh Mulhern. "But within the context of Hak’s album and its wider themes, I think it’s also about escaping, disassociating and connection through disconnection. I wanted to use this as an excuse to see how far we could push all the techniques and visual language I established for Hak with our previous video for Telephones 4 Eyes."We mixed 3D animation, AI generative animation, props, and puppets at an active warehouse party. I wanted to make something that felt like you were falling through different layers of reality swept up in the momentum of a night out that lasts 36 hours.”

Teenage love fails to run smoothly in Ethan &amp; Tom's excellent take on a high school musical for Tendai.A frosty moment between Tendai and his girlfriend - played by&nbsp;Sephora Parish - is played out in the halls of a London school, in a series of well-crafted sequences that involve a sizeable supporting cast.It's of a piece with the directing duo's facility with experimental camera techniques, with a constantly moving camera, which ends up rotating around the couple.But this is also arguably Ethan &amp; Tom's most sophisticated video so far in terms of execution, with an element of dramatic tension and a proper pop video feel in terms of scale and look. A real step-up for the talented directing duo.

From them lying on the bare wood floor to writhing on the sofa,&nbsp;Zamiri's fluid camera captures their antics, then introduces the presence of their band, adding to the sense of dangerous immediacy.Then things get really messy, as a pigeon appears in the ruckus, followed by another and then a whole flock, doing what pigeons do...&nbsp;&nbsp;a surreal moment to underline the emotion. That suits the track's enigmatic&nbsp;style, and&nbsp;Aidan Zamiri's love of blending fashion aesthetics with off-the-wall ideas.&nbsp;It's another smash from the director, in the arresting lo-fi manner he has brought to his recent work for FKA twigs ad Jockstrap. One that you won't be able to scrub from your mind anytime soon.&nbsp;
