Dan Cadan and Jonathan 'Scully' Mowatt's latest video for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds&nbsp;brings the French nouvelle vague&nbsp;to modern London, and as with previous work for Noel, features a big name cast: Matt Smith and Gala Gordon play the lovers in a story inspired directly by Godard's Breathless.The video for We're On Our Way Now provides a snapshot of the lives of the couple, where an ambivalence and darkness lurks under the surface of a true romance. The directors also leave enough to the viewer's imagination to try to piece together a bigger story.As with the Jean-Paul Belmondo character in Breathless, Matt Smith is mixed up with some shady goings-on - either working for, or possibly against Noel Gallagher, who features in a cameo as a gangland figure. Smith bring depth to the part and is ideally cast. In their fourth collaboration with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Dan Cadan and Jonathan 'Scully' Mowatt deliver a richly atmospheric&nbsp;setpiece&nbsp;starring Jack O'Connell. In fact, the video for Blue Moon Rising&nbsp;feels like part of a bigger narrative - a gangster movie,&nbsp;also featuring&nbsp;Noel himself as the head of this particular family business.While Noel is in the back office, discussing serious matters with his associates, O'Connell appears as a more fun-loving guy - rather worse for wear, and lured onto the dancefloor of a deserted club by a mystery woman, played by Gala Gordon. All the while they are&nbsp;observed by another, more serious young&nbsp;man (James Nelson Joyce).&nbsp;&nbsp;It's a very cinematic scenario, with some electric chemistry between O'Connell and Gordon, well-paced to work with the track. It's also a video that does that rare thing of putting Noel Gallagher's brooding charisma to good use. By the end you want to know more about this set of characters, and the relationship between them.

Yorkshireman Dan Cadan, 44, has worked extensively as a writer&nbsp;in film and TV for more than twenty years. But this year has been one of his most productive in&nbsp;music videos as, together with Scully (aka Jonathan Mowatt) he has directed three videos for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - most recently exploring hardship at Christmas time&nbsp;in <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/11/22/noel-gallagher%E2%80%99s-high-flying-birds-wandering-star-dan-cadan-and-scully/62051" target="_blank">the&nbsp;Wandering Star video</a>, starring Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters.Dan, (above; photo by Rankin)&nbsp;spent a decade writing alongside Guy Ritchie, and his extensive list of&nbsp;collaborators include Madonna, Idris Elba, Will.I.Am and Goldie. His repertoire of films include&nbsp;international award-winning short, The Devil’s Wedding and 2018 debut feature Walk Like a Panther, set in West Yorkshire, near Huddesfield where he grew up.&nbsp;Having directed or co-directed videos for Mumford &amp; Sons, Rick Astley and&nbsp;the Kasabian video for Ill Ray&nbsp;- the latter featuring his wife Lena Headey&nbsp;- Dan joined The Graft for music videos and commercials last year.&nbsp;He says: "I prefer people to know about my work, than me personally - although much of my work says a lot about me personally, if you look closely."&nbsp;But we decided to ask Dan about his work and life anyway...WORK:How long have you held your current position? We scoured through over 35 hours worth of [70s and 80s TV show]&nbsp;The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club footage to find every nicotine-stained finger tap, well-coiffured head nod, increasingly-energetic pensioner dance, and 1980’s TV icon that would cut and synch perfectly.[vidtoken data:2]And I love Noel’s performance in the vid, as he wins the crowd over without really giving a fuck. He’s just there with his band to play, whether they like it or not. &nbsp;You can really feel the discomfort in the room at the start - it’s quite painful! I also got quite the kick out of watching/hearing Scully dealing with Bernard Manning Jnr and Bobby Ball...<blockquote>Wandering Star&nbsp;is me getting back to what I really love. That video was his idea. Scully doesn’t come from this world but we’re old pals, so he contacted me to see if I could help him out. &nbsp;And I could, so I did. &nbsp;And so here we are, about to shoot the fourth video for Noel. &nbsp;Scully, however, proved himself to be rather revelatory in a creative sense. He has some great ideas and knows what he works - and he’s a fucking joy to work with. And I’m not greedy - I’m all about collaboration. It's like Bad Santa meets the Ken Loach version of Bonnie and Clyde, starring Stephen Graham, and Hannah Walters.Taking a narrative-led direction this time around, the directors' third video for Noel - and his first Nöel-related music video&nbsp;- is a heartfelt story of northern grit, and fighting through against sadness and hardship in&nbsp;true salt-of-the-earth style.It's the story of a mum who meets Santa whilst doing all she can to make sure her kids have gifts at Christmas. As she treads carefully around a supermarket, aware of the security guard's gaze, she picks out a few items and slips them into her bag. When the guard catches on, she needs help from her guardian Santa to help make her getaway.Then it&nbsp;becomes clear that they are like modern Robin Hoods, attempting to bring Christmas cheer where its most needed. And there's a lump in the throat twist in the end (if you hadn't already guessed it) for good measure.It's a film that packs a proper seasonal punch, full of gritty, poignant seasonal goodwill. The core is that&nbsp;palpable emotion between Santa and the single mum - not so surprising perhaps, as Graham and Walters are a real-life couple.&nbsp;You may prefer this to one those perennial tear-jerking commercials trying to sell you stuff...
