Andrew Litten's thought-provoking video for Belle &amp; Sebastian features&nbsp;Olympic figure skater&nbsp;Jonathan Cassar, who uses his time on the ice&nbsp;to&nbsp;escape from the demons of his&nbsp;past.Litten's approach to&nbsp;I Don't Know What You See In Me - a song from the new Belle &amp; Sebastian album Late Developers - is to create a starkly cold aesthetic and faintly disturbing atmosphere at a vintage ice rink, which is deserted apart from the presence of Cassar.&nbsp;This is&nbsp;a real counterpoint to the familiar lightness of B&amp;S frontman Stuart Murchoch's voice, and then the champion skater begins a&nbsp;graceful routine on the ice with plastic bag taped around his&nbsp;head. This powerful symbol of suffocation remains until the final moments of the video. &nbsp;&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]"The band was passionate about this being a character study of a figure skater,&nbsp;and referenced one of my favourite noirs, The Swimmer," Litten explains. "I wanted to juxtapose the sensitivity of the song - which speaks to depression, self image and acceptance -&nbsp;with a narrative that confronts these feelings head on."The bag and the pulses of suffocation serve as a reminder of the baggage we carry throughout our lives, and how we cannot truly see ourselves until we have done the work to do so.&nbsp;I have endless gratitude to Stuart and the band for allowing us to create something so bold and unnerving with a hint of catharsis."It's a touching and powerful exploration of self acceptance, with plenty of engaging visuals to keep viewers hooked.

Young Replicant rounds off his visual trilogy for Sam Dew, with the intriguing promo for DJ.This is the third video for Dew by Alex Takacs aka Young Replicant, in a series for the singer's debut album Moonlit Fools, which&nbsp;follows a network of mysterious workers, unseen by anyone, who deliver bubblegum card-like messages in the middle of the night. These then act as catalysts for emotion, stirring up heartache or desire in the recipients.The delightful first video for NTWFL sets the scene for this enigmatic scenario.[vidtoken data:0]&nbsp;Then in Gone, we begin to see the same action from a different perspective, adding characters and deepening the mystery in a classic noir style.[vidtoken data:1]The video for DJ brings Sam Dew more to the forefront in a performance setting without compromising the overall dreamlike quality. A woman is drawn by the card of Dew to a screen in a carpark where she finds him and is then transported to a deserted beach, where another&nbsp;screen blots out the night sky.Posing abstract questions about our purpose on Earth in the age of technology, and what might be stopping us from becoming our best selves, the video is painted with a melancholic aesthetic, mixing intimate, slice-of-life vignettes with jarring reminders of technological influence, in the form of these omnipresent screens and displays.&nbsp;Young Replicant has long been able to establishing a visual universe and internal logic to his work that is entirely unique, and he has refined that further in this trilogy. It's a lovely thing - while also being a terrific&nbsp;showcase for Sam Dew's talent as a vocalist.

Vonavi reflects on past trauma in Andrew Litten's video for Regrow.&nbsp;The short film/music video hybrid focuses&nbsp;on the lifelong effects of childhood trauma on the Ukrainian composer turned solo artist,&nbsp;and spans the life of a man told in two different time periods, as he attempts to understand how his life came to be this way.Cleverly linking the time periods with&nbsp;props and match cuts, we see a boy abandoned at a gas station by his parents, and the grown up man he has become sleeping rough on the streets. In a series of cinematic vignettes, we see the man searching for his Mother, as evidenced through flashbacks, desperately trying to fix his scattered past. When he reaches the door of her supposed house, however, he has second thoughts about confronting her.The end is left ambiguous, and the man seems to flash a smile as he is running away. Is he on his way to a better life? Is it better for him to keep going without dragging the past back up? As Litten leaves it open-ended it suggests his journey, and indeed the journey of the artist, is just getting started.&nbsp;The piece was shot on 35mm in Bakersfield, California, and DP Ben Mullen creates a raw yet nostalgic energy with his composition and lighting choices.&nbsp;

Smuggler director Miles Jay presents a moving short film for JAY-Z&rsquo;s latest &ldquo;Smile&rdquo;. Written by Miles, the video is a visually magnificent piece inspired by the emotional experiences of Gloria Carter, JAY-Z&rsquo;s mother.Set in Brooklyn in the 1970s, the video explores Gloria living in the shadows as she is forced to hide her homosexuality. We see her flourishing relationship with her female neighbour, which develops into a budding sexuality that can never be realised. Backgrounded by the social and economic pressures of the time, the two women sacrifice living their truths for the betterment of their children.A young Shawn Carter witnesses the vulnerability in his mother for the first time and through her pain learns to smile through adversity. JAY-Z&rsquo;s lyricism concludes with a poem written by Gloria in which she unveils her homosexuality for the first time, revealing the insight of her experience.Smile&nbsp;is a special and personal film, rendered compassionately by Miles Jay and expertly photographed by Stuart Winecoff.
