Two lovers flee a dystopian surveillance state and head for the hills in&nbsp;Benjy Kirkman's promo for legendary rock outfit Garbage.The video for There's No Future In Optimism is a cinematic, retrofuturistic vision - shot in Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands -&nbsp;boasting a grungy monochromatic cinematography and grade to&nbsp;match the defiant thrust of the song's lyrics.&nbsp;Using 16mm zooms and handheld camerawork director Kirkman and DoP Will Gething thrust the viewer into the&nbsp;world of the artistic young couple's shoes as they flee the concrete city, tracked by CCTV cameras.&nbsp;Retro-futurism and a return to nature is at the forefront of this creative, with a visual aesthetic that gels with the dark glamour of the band's classic videos of the Nineties.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]“I love the title," says Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson, of the song - which comes from the band's forthcoming 8th album.&nbsp;"The band sent it to me and I was like, 'This is great. I’m keeping that.'&nbsp;But the lyrics are an action against that title. Because if we allow our fatalism or our negativity to really take over, we will crumble. It’s about a city, in my case, Los Angeles, but it could be anywhere where bad stuff is happening."After the George Floyd murder, which is one of few things in my life that I wish I’d never seen: I was changed entirely by seeing the footage of that cop kneeling on George Floyd’s neck. In Los Angeles there were huge protests and a lot of upheaval after that. Above our house in Hollywood, there were helicopters all day long, for days on end. It was really precarious, chaotic and terrifying.”&nbsp;

English actor and singer Nell Tiger Free (Game of Thrones, Servant, The First Omen) conceives and self-directs the video for her debut single, where the rainjacket she's wearing dissolves under a downpour.Filmed at Black Island Studios, Nell wanted to experiment with the idea of her clothing dissolving as she performed the song. The production sourced a dissolving fabric which was tailored into a jacket - four of which were made to allow to shoot four takes.&nbsp;Nell's vision was realised by her DOP and directing collaborator Dan Bronks, the film premiering on&nbsp;Rolling Stone.

Calum Macdiarmid directs an everyday suburban story of pre-first date nerves - with added iguana - for The Modfather's new release.The video for Paul Weller's Rise Up Singing introduces Joe Freeman as the teenage boy anxiously preparing for that first date, and facing the possiblity that the date is not going to show.Taking place in a house with many original 1960s features helps with the timeless kitchen sink appeal of the scenario - but Macdiarmid throws in a curveball with the addition of&nbsp;a green, ring-tailed iguana (called Flo) adding an exotic touch to the prosaic English suburban setting.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Flo doesn't quite steal the show from the lead. He is the son of Martin Freeman - a big Weller fan himself, who starred in the Pick It Up promo just under a decade ago - and having been cast by Karmel Cochrane on the basis of his casting tape, Joe Freeman&nbsp;demonstrates an easy charm on-screen that suggests he is a chip off the old block.“The video was particularly fun because it felt like a short film with a focus on narrative which made getting the necessary coverage much easier," says Calum Macdiarmid.&nbsp;"The hardest challenge was trying to tell a super minimalist concept - boy gets ready for date - in a way that gave it a little arc, and went with the flow of the music. My ambition was to make it feel almost like the music was a score written for the story, using the rise and fall of the energy to punctuate certain moments.”

Joe Dixon directs an unsettling, AI-manipulated promo for&nbsp;Cordelia Gartide.The video for 16xo&nbsp;draws viewers into a hall of mirrors that represents the internet’s infancy. A place made of distance where almost everything is a disguise, including the teenage Cordelia, who we gradually realise is a faceless simulation.“The process of working with the AI was slow and intuitive, we learned quickly we had to treat it like a collaborator rather than another piece of software," Dixon explains."At the same time, I really wanted to avoid it being ‘an AI’ film, so we used more traditional filmic techniques like split diopter shots to pull the two worlds together."[imgtoken data:1]The innovative, surrealistic promo perfectly encapsulates the emotional themes of the track, and the blend of real world and AI technology feels like a step up from some of the more generative examples floating about in the community. By using it in a collaborative process as opposed to just prompting and cutting it together, it suggests a way to enrich the visual world the filmmaker has envisioned, rather than a shortcut to a style.&nbsp;"I am very happy with the results," says Dixon. "The visuals are beautiful, and they really build on the song's message. However, for me, the true centre of the video is Cordelia’s brilliant and haunting performance, rather than the technology we used to capture it.”

Jacek Zmarz directs a dreamlike promo for Chartreuse, which&nbsp;sees a handful of characters each wrapped in their own mini narratives, wondering around a mysterious forest. .&nbsp;The video for Switch It On, Switch It Off is built around the central image of a parachutist who hasn't quite stuck his landing,&nbsp; presented as an interwoven montage of surreal dreamscapes, connected by a sense of whimsical wonder.&nbsp;"The video is inspired mainly by some Tarkovsky films and a little cottage that I visited a couple times as a kid," Zmarz mentions. "The image of the parachute diver was always there for me when listening to the song, and him getting carried away became the central point on which we built the rest of the video."I love the song's musical fluctuations and lyrics that sometimes felt like an internal monologue, and I wanted the video to feel like an exploration of these types of private and tender moments, things that can run away in your head until something happens in the real world and snaps you out of it."
