Directing duo NoCowboys - Jody Elizabeth and Betty Cutting - direct an effervescent promo for London-based Irish artist April.&nbsp;The&nbsp;concept for 54321 blends shimmery metallic textures and dreamlike performance vignettes, amplifying the hypnotic vibes of the track.&nbsp;The use of in-camera experimentation and reflected light seamlessly blends the multiple setups, giving the whole concept a singular style and aesthetic.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]"(We) had been looking for an opportunity to experiment with light, installations and in-camera effects for a while, so were delighted when this brief landed from April," say NoCowboys. "The whole process was a big, playful experimentation, as we found and tried different objects and textures to pass light through and bounce off."Massive thanks to art director Jessamy Hadfield for bringing to life and creating the mirror installation based on some terrible sketches we sent. Amitay Leopold delivers a strong visual metaphor in his&nbsp;video for Maxïmo Park that may prove to be a test for serious vertigo sufferers.&nbsp;The promo for I Don’t Know What I’m Doing features lead singer Paul Smith climbing a ladder - into the sky. When we join him he is already unfeasibly distant from the ground and suffering the trials and tribulations of someone stuck between a rock and a hard place. And his only option is to keep on climbing...It is a fine analogy of the emotions we feel - such as fear, anxiety, guilt - when faced with the inevitable consequences of our often hasty actions. In the case of Smith, he says the song is about becoming a new parent, "which we’ve tried to put across in our new video via the more abstract notion of an endless ladder!”Of course, Paul Smith was not required to ascend&nbsp;miles above terra firma in order to create the metaphor - it was actually achieved in a London studio, with greenscreen. But he still gives the impression he&nbsp;has been climbing a ladder for weeks, and&nbsp;still has a long way to go.&nbsp;In fact, director Leopold says that the point of the video is essentially positive: Smith may be on a ladder, but he's looking up to the stars. Well, the moon actually.&nbsp;“Uncertainty can easily send us spiralling downwards," he says.&nbsp;"We show the opposite: climbing up as a way of escaping a situation. But even that is not an easy task. So what is preferred, to stay and confront life - or avoid it?”

Pale Waves'&nbsp;Heather Baron-Gracie delivers the heartache at the heart of Change lying in a field of flowers, surrounded by giant butterflies. Then she gets into&nbsp;gothier gear to perform in a meadow with the band - and be caught in a serious downpour.The video - the second from new Dirty Films new division Monster - was released earlier this month after Radio 1’s Hottest Record in the World&nbsp;premiere.

To celebrate the fifty year anniversary of his seminal 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman, Yusuf/Cat Stevens has reimagined it's tracks for 2020 - including a more laidback, jazzier&nbsp;version of the album's biggest hit Wild World. Now Effie Pappa has visualised the new recording, drawing inspiration from the classic 1940s movie Casablanca, and reminding us that&nbsp;even the toughest days can be brightened by the optimistic perspective of youth.Pappa conjures up an atmospheric club, like Rick's Bar in Casablanca, but with kids playing the roles of Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Dooley Wilson, and others. A card game between two of the young characters is the jumping off point for depictions of the just how wild the world can be, and always has been - with newsreel footage from around the same time period intercutting the scenes in the club.&nbsp;Rendering a modern day filter on the 1940s story reveals how different yet how similar some of the global issues we now face. But ultimately&nbsp; as the young leads get togethe in a aircraft witnessing an animated dog fight, the WW2-era world dissipates, as they find themselves having tea in space, and drifting&nbsp;towards the heavens in a symbol of hope.[imgtoken data:1]Packed with visual imagination and wonder, Pappa's&nbsp;video is also a product of the conditions imposed by the pandemic: developed and produced remotely between the UK and Greece, where the shoot took place. In many ways, the video itself is a&nbsp;testament to the spirit of optimism in the new world we find ourselves in.And Yusuf/Cat says of the film: “It shows how much we need art to direct our thoughts sometimes towards inexpressible goals; to relive early childlike innocence and keep our eyes of hope open beyond the clouds of war and darkness.”

Daniel Brereton directs a procession of the decorated and the bizarre in this cool clip for Sundara Karma.As far as subgenres of music videos go, I'd rank&nbsp;cool funerals&nbsp;pretty highly. The Kills had the market cornered on it recently with their 2016 video for Doing It To Death&nbsp;dripping with cool &nbsp;– but now Sundara Karma have a pretty good shot at the crown with&nbsp;Explore.&nbsp;Shot on 16mm on a sunny day in Abney Park cemetery, Stoke Newington,&nbsp;the procession sees the band and a cast of misfits put someone to rest, and look damn good doing it.Identical twins, lovers, an iguana, an amazing looking hearse and the band performing in between graves makes for a dreamy clip, as Ruben Woodin-Deschamps' gorgeously composed shots slowly creep in and out of one another.

Daniel Brereton takes Bastille&#39;s Dan Smith on a lawless American road trip in the video for &#39;Glory&#39;.Partially a glorious piece of road-movie Americana and partially a study in the shaping of memories - Brereton&#39;s video sees a couple (Bastille&#39;s Dan Smith and actress May Daniels) lie on the hood of a car and reminisce about their trip. The tales they tell materialise as flashbacks with details changing as the pair misremember their antics. Beautifully shot by Adam Kimmel (whose feature work includes Capote and Never Let Me Go)&nbsp;the film cuts between perspectives to tell a beautifully fragmented tale.

Daniel Brereton&#39;s video for Drones Club is a carefully choreographed surveillance sermon set atop the toxic wastes of Beckton Alps.Shot on several formats, from mini DV to 16mm and, of course, drones, the clip documents Drones Club documenting themselves as they make a pilgrimage to the top of the wasteland, which has a storied history of pollution and abject failure in the face of regeneration.Dressed like a high-fashion militia, the band dance in the golden hour and shout their manifesto to the city sprawling out below in what becomes a dreamy mixed-format statement of intent.

Daniel Brereton takes us to the streets of Shanghai to complete a trilogy of girl gang-themed music videos for Parisian band Las Aves.The first&nbsp;saw Focus Creeps&#39; follow a team of&nbsp;girl skaters in Los Angeles for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDZLRpAlK94" target="_blank">Leo</a>, while the second (and Brereton&#39;s first for the band)&nbsp;for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYlUeifL3LQ" target="_blank">N.E.M.</a>, featured a sassy group&nbsp;of hairdressers in&nbsp;South London. This time, for the title track of Las Aves&#39;s debut album&nbsp;Die In Shanghai, Brereton focusses upon an all-female, all-in-pink troupe of street acrobats in China&#39;s most populous city.&nbsp;And Shanghai provides a dazzling variety of locations, where the charming girls parade their range of exceptional skills, in the video photographed by Dylan Doyle. It&#39;s also the latest in a diverse range of work&nbsp;helmed by Brereton this year, including for&nbsp;Gorgon City, Julio Bashmore, Soulwax and Stella McCartney.&nbsp;

Daniel Brereton serves up a surprise for&nbsp;Gorgon City&#39;s team-up with&nbsp;Blythe Pepino from Vaults.&nbsp;For all his&nbsp;experience, he&#39;s not a&nbsp;director well known for narrative work for mainstream dance acts. And this is a narrative video with a familiar storyline, about&nbsp;two teenagers sneaking out for a night on the town together.But Brereton has given this&nbsp;scenario his own distinctive stamp, particularly with the casting of two young leads who have the individuality and&nbsp;chemistry that makes their adventure worth watching. And if&nbsp;he&#39;s a director best known for his quirky work for alternative acts, the quirkiness here just serves to make it more believable and human.&nbsp;

Daniel Brereton has directed this cultish vision for New York-based band&nbsp;Porches, which sees them&nbsp;lounging around in a mansion house, sometimes together -&nbsp;other times apart -&nbsp;but not entirely there at all.Playing on the opposite meanings of the chorus &#39;I want to be apart/I want to be a part of it all,&#39; the bandmates are shown isolated from each other but also united by the same lethargy,&nbsp;wearing matching black outfits and&nbsp;drinking bottled milk around a pot of fake flowers.&nbsp;The scene is constructed and fake rendered&nbsp;all the more expressive of a group which is stunted and&nbsp;filled with longing.&nbsp;

The first collaborative project between musician Rebecca Whitbread (aka Lovelace) and filmmaker Ben Parkin has produced an excellent&nbsp;video for the track Fathers And Sons.It follows the progress of two boys as they ramble across Dartmoor, and the dynamic of a febrile sibling relationship (the boys are played by two brothers,&nbsp;Gabe and Mylo Sermon) is played out&nbsp;convincingly. But then the drama as the pair become unattached is resolved in surprising,&nbsp;very satisfying&nbsp;fashion.
