Joe Wheatley directs an impressive promo for Billie Marten's just released new album Drop Cherries -&nbsp;an 18 minute live film featuring Billie and her band performing four songs from the album, brilliantly&nbsp;achieved in a single take.&nbsp;Shot in&nbsp;rural Nottinghamshire, the film has an intimate, gentle aesthetic, and makes brilliant use of the&nbsp;anachronistic house location. Dom Monks, who produced the album, was also recording engineer on the film, ensuring that the quality of the sound matches the work by Wheatley and his DoP Ben Marshall.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Caught up in the nostalgic, breezy atmosphere, Marten's performance feels wistful yet incredibly present, exploring the different moods and themes of the album.&nbsp;

Ontario-based alternative band Sundried Whales go on the run from a humanoid fish, in Carlo Quicho's brilliantly bonkers promo for Always.&nbsp;Outrageously joyful and full of unabashed fun, the video sees the group tearing up the streets of Ontario as the masked fish-man chases them down, building to a climax where twenty extras beat him (it?) down with pool noodles.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;"The video is a loose allegory for conditional love and how it pervades our lives in confusing but endearing ways," Quicho mentions, which is an interesting perspective on the delightful madness encapsulated in the video.&nbsp;"We really tried to encapsulate this nostalgic feeling so evident in the town of Hamilton, Ontario in Canada," he&nbsp;continues. "Malls trapped in a time warp of the 90s; snow covered fields with plumes of smoke from factories in the background..."With basically no money, it was a pretty run and gun shoot, so we really focused on endearing performance setups with the band, insane action sequences (mostly running around the streets of Hamilton like maniacs), and compositionally interesting shots. We loved having the snow around."

James Green directs a hyperactive black and white promo for Crows.&nbsp;The video is a&nbsp;frenetic fury of mixed media performance footage, shot and presented in a tactile, lo-fi aesthetic with abstract narrative undertones.The glitchy, analog mixed-media execution represents&nbsp;an exaggeration of the long, demeaning processes people have to go through in order to receive Government support and funding.[imgtoken data:1]"Within a kinetic performance, we wanted to lightly reference aspects of the song’s sociopolitical themes in an abstract manner, by using the loose narrative of the band being watched and judged by an unknown organisation as they perform," explains Green.&nbsp;"To ramp up the chaotic analog aesthetic, we used around seven different analog shooting formats to capture the performances, later distorting the edit in post using analog glitch pedals and CRT monitors."Shot on a micro-budget with a skeleton crew during the second lockdown, the video is a complete triumph - stirring and dramatic, with a breakneck cut and a real sense of timeliness and vigour.&nbsp;

Joe Wheatley teams up with Nottingham indie band Do Nothing to create a world made of cardboard boxes for their breakthrough track Glueland.Singer Chris Bailey describes the song as being about stuck in a weird limbo, and Wheatley places the frontman in a tunnel, composed of cardboard boxes (made in Nottingham), occasionally emerging into open spaces&nbsp;where seemingly unconnected things, from the innocuous to the outlandish,&nbsp;are taking place.“As a native of Nottingham it was great to connect with a local band that are making genuinely interesting music," says Wheatley. "Chris explained the rationale of the album art with references to Xanadu from Citizen Kane, and the concept developed from there. Fast forward and we had 400 cardboard boxes to deal with.”

Faux 'Take Back Time' by Will & Carly

Fujiko Nakaya&#39;s remarkable &#39;fog sculpture&#39; called London Fog, recently&nbsp;exhibiting at London&#39;s Tate Modern and experienced by thousands of visitors, has inspired a mesmerising short film - the directing debut of&nbsp;Ilona McIlwain.It features the compelling&nbsp;72 year old Japanese actor and performer Min Tanaka, responding to the enveloping mists of London Fog with a display of controlled physicality and emotion that has your heart beating a little faster.The impact is intensified by the lighting effects of Shiro Takatani from Japanese art collective Dumb Type, and a searing, minimalist soundtrack by Ryuichi Sakamoto - composer of the scores for The Revenant and Ghost In The Shell.&nbsp;The overall effect is stylishly cinematic - almost Kurasawa-like in its simple intensity.&nbsp;

Vaults&#39;&nbsp;version of One Day I&#39;ll Fly Away is the soundtrack for this year&#39;s annual blockbuster John Lewis Christmas ad.&nbsp;It says something for the standalone video - the music video directing debut of choreographer Alexandra Green &ndash; that Buster the boxer dog&#39;s antics&nbsp;on his family&#39;s new trampoline&nbsp;are not missed.This is a wonderfully choreographed piece of work, exploring the many facets of the self. Human bodies undergo&nbsp;metamorphoses to become flowing shapes growing from a centre, and a series of impossible mirror shots further fracture the idea of the self. With costume flowing and sprawling around the dancers, and a dramatically sparse location to boot, the video is a visually striking piece of contemporary dance with a rich, classical twist.

That&#39;s an interesting visual device to depict the momentary&nbsp;escape from darkness and misery offered by drug use, and the narrative plays out in a series of short scenes showing how the man&#39;s past seems to be&nbsp;repeating itself, despite his best efforts.&nbsp;
