Photos by James Gifford-Mead.The 18th annual UK Music Video Awards, the biggest global celebration of music video creativity, produced another night of joy and emotion at the ceremony held last night (October 30th) at Magazine London.A$AP Rocky’s Tailor Swif won Video Of The Year and five honours in total, while videos for FKA twigs won four awards, and Gabriel Moses was named Best Director - and accepted the award accompanied by his mother, Grace Sotonrin (pictured above and below).Above (from top): Best Director winner Gabriel Moses with his mother, Grace Sotonrin; Icon Award winner Damian Kulash; Video Of The Year-winning Directors Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia with producer Natan Schottenfels (left) At the show hosted by Ana Matronic of Scissor Sisters fame for the third year running, over 40 awards were announced, including two special honours: The Icon Award, which was accepted by OK Go frontman and director Damian Kulash, for the extraordinary videos the band have made for two decades; and the inaugural Legend Award, which celebrated the achievements of trailblazing director Diane Martel, who passed away in September.The Best Production Company award, sponsored by KODAK, went to Object & Animal for the second year running, and the company’s Morgan Clement won Best Executive Producer. Luna Carmoon won Best New Director, and also Best Rock/Alternative Video – Newcomer for Fontaines DC’s In The Modern World.Above (from top): Best New Director winner Luna Carmoon; Best Production Company winners Object & Animal; Best Pop Video UK and Best Alternative Video UK winner Jordan Hemingway.The Object & Animal-produced video for FKA twigs’ Eusexua, directed by Jordan Hemingway, was a multiple award-winner on the night, with Zoï Tatopoulos winning Best Choreography In A Video, and Charlie Von Rotberg of Stitch Editing winning Best Editing In A Video for their work on the promo, before Hemingway accepted the Best Pop Video UK prize for Eusexua. Hemingway also won Best Alternative Video UK for another twigs video, Striptease.Among the most joyful moments on the night came when two individuals from the British music video industry won individual honours for the first time: Polydor commissioner Louis Danckwerts won Best Creative Commissioner; and Chris Murdoch won Best Producer. Once again, the international attendees of the awards came from far and wide to be present at the UKMVAs – including Osmar Junior, who flew in from Brazil to accept the Best Colour Grading In A Video award, sponsored by Studio RM, for his work on Rubel's Ouro/Reckoner.OK Go’s Damian Kulash accepted the Icon Award, having flown in from Los Angeles overnight, with very short acceptance speech, saying: “long live music videos” - following a video tribute that featured messages from friends, family and fans, including sister Trish Sie, wife Kristin Gore, directors Patrick Daughters and DANIELS - and Adam Buxton. Kulash was then on stage later in the evening to accept the Best Rock Video International prize with one of his co-directors of the video Aaron Duffy, who had just arrived from New York. At the fourth Videoclip Italia Awards on May 17th - and the first held in Milan - Nicolò Bassetto’s feminist vision for Lamante won three major awards, while Damiano David and Novze collected two awards each, with a strong showing of self-produced, low-budget music videos challenging the grip of output from the major labels.The awards ceremony, hosted at Base Milano and preceded by industry panels and networking sessions, celebrated outstanding projects chosen by an international jury of music video professionals.Lamante and director Nicolò Bassetto (above) emerged as the night’s big winners, taking home three awards for Non chiamarmi bella, a playful and ironic feminist anthem. They video claimed Best Italian Music Video, Best Alternative Video, and the Student Jury Award. The duo had previously won Best Alternative Video last year with a previous collaboration, L’ultimo piano.Pop icon Damiano David and rising artist Novze also saw strong recognition. David’s Silverlines (produced by Partizan) won Best Pop Video and Best Production Design, while Novze’s J’existe, directed by Marco Pacchiana, earned awards for Best Cinematography (Federico Di Maria) and Best Editing (Leo Ferrari).Simone Peluso was named Director of the Year (Vision Award, in partnership with Kodak and Panalight), thanks to his versatile work across both mainstream and experimental visuals — from Angelina Mango’s pop productions to the raw aesthetic of Me, July.In the Best Young Director category (under 25, sponsored by Hollyland), Gabriele Redaelli from Milan (b. 2000) took the prize, while animation pioneer Donato Sansone won Best Rock Video for his surreal work on Water Tanks by I Hate My Village.Independent productions had a standout year: The Frog’s Larry, shot on a tight budget by Federico Munari, won Best Low Budget Video, while the Extraclip section - dedicated to hybrid formats like short films and documentaries for musical storytelling — was claimed by Giada Bossi for Chiamare casa sempre lo stesso posto, an ambitious 18-minute piece created with avant-pop artist Arssalendo, which was also nominated at the last UKMVAs.The 2025 edition marked a clear shift toward fresh talent and creative independence, while established production house Borotalco collected three trophies in technical categories, with Billboard Italia also awarding them for Tuta Gold by Mahmood, directed by Attilio Cusani.Among major labels, Universal Music (Island Records) led the way with five awards, confirming their visual strategy, while Sony Music followed with two.“This year’s winners show how an international jury can highlight creativity and vision over name recognition or industry status," commented Videoclip Italia festival directors Alessio Rosa and Nicola Marceddu. French directing duo Torso and Italian directors Tommaso Ottomano took the biggest honours at the 3rd Videoclip Italia Awards, the biggest celebration of the art and industry of Italian music video production, which was held in Rome last Sunday evening, June 2nd.Awards were given in 22 categories at the event held at Largo Venue, which brought together industry professionals for an afternoon of networking and discussions on the current and future landscape of their profession before the awards ceremony itself.Tommaso Ottomano took the prestigious Director Of The Year - Vision Award, while three of Ottomano's videos also won awards on the night: Måneskin's Gossip, featuring Tom Morello, winning Best Rock MV and Best Hair & Makeup; Chiello's A pochi passi winning Best Production Design; and Lucio Corsi's Radio Mayday winning Best VFX.Torso's video for singer Mahmood's Cocktail d’amore won the big music video award, Best Italian MV. Marco Pacchiana won the Best Director under 25 award, while Enrico Bellenghi (pictured above) won two awards, for Best Electronic MV and the Students Award for his video for Andrea Costanza's Natività. The ceremony also honoured the creativity of directors including Nicolò Bassetto, Nicola Corradino and Eneo Colombi. news Holly Hunter wins Yarns 2023 with comedy short Banana Boat

Stitch and Homespun's annual short film competition Yarns climaxed last night in London with the premiere screening of the four finalists' films, and the crowning of the winner of Yarns 2023 - Holly Hunter, for the entertaining comedy Banana Boat.Hosted by film critic and broadcaster James King, the four finalists' films were screened to a packed-out crowd at Prince Charles Cinema in London's West End. The audience later moved to the nearby Phoenix Arts Club for the after party, where after a public vote by the audience, Hunter was crowned the winner.Banana Boat is a screwball comedy which tells the story of a stand-off over the final 'banana boat' ride of the summer, in a holiday resort. The film sees two sets of mothers and sons square up to each other in a bid to secure the last tickets, putting a new twist on a classic source of comedy, the British class system.The other finalists and their films for this year were: Travelling Home, a documentary directed by Juliet Klottrup; Mr Biscuit, a comedy directed by Doug Redfern and Joe Roberts; and Do You Have Kids? an impressionistic drama-cum-dance piece, directed by Tom Gentle and Sam Brain.For this year's Yarns competition, titled The Ends, each finalist were given resources from Stitch and Homespun and other Yarns sponsors to make their films, having written screenplays inspired by the endings of one of three poem by spoken-word artist Miss Yankey. The screening of the films at the Prince Charles was preceded by a marvellous performance by Miss Yankey of two of the poems and a third, specially written for the evening.Each finalist was also mentored by an established figure in advertising and music video production world - Stink Films' Keith McCarthy mentored Holly Hunter throughout the process - and their films were edited by an editor on the Homespun emerging talent roster. Laura Zvarikova worked on the winning film Banana Boat, while Laura Reyes edited Mr. Biscuit, Chris Hutchings cut Do You Have Kids? and Luke Anderson edited Travelling Home.An entirely not-for-profit initiative, Yarns consistently identifies the next wave of directing talent and provides finalists with a unique platform to turn their idea into a fully formed short film with the support of the industry’s foremost talent.Yarns also sees the finalists’ partner with some of the industry’s foremost talent to create their film. Those involved in creating the films this year, through their time, expertise and sponsorship are Kodak, Slingshot Intergalactic, Sine, Freefolk, nineteentwenty and Absolute Post.Holly Hunter comments: “I am incredibly grateful for the whole experience, the talented team I got to work with, the support from Yarns and the honour to make a film about morals and Banana Boats! It was so much fun to create and that’s what it’s all about!”Meanwhile Tim Hardy, co-owner at Stitch Editing, says he is delighted with how all the films turned out at Yarns 2023.“We wanted this Yarns final to be our best yet, and it surpassed our expectations," says Hardy. "We were blown away at the turnout, which made for a brilliant atmosphere throughout. The directors produced one of our strongest collections to date, with some truly amazing shorts, any one of which could’ve taken home the prize.
