Music Video Preservation Society with legendary director Tim Pope on November 18th
Promonews - 21st Oct 2026
A special edition of Music Video Preservation Society takes place at the Prince Charles Cinema in London on 18th November with one of the most brilliant music video directors of all time: the one and only Tim Pope.
One the most significant figures in the history of music videos, Tim was instrumental in establishing the pop video medium in popular culture. While grasping its potential as an artform from the start, his boundless imagination, spirit and wit was always in service to the music and musicians he loved. As a result his body of work remains fresh to this day.
From blagging his way into the just-emerging music video industry to direct promos for Soft Cell in the early 80s he blazed a trail with the likes of David Bowie, The The, Neil Young, Queen, Talk Talk, Siouxsie, Style Council and, of course, The Cure - the band he is most closely associated with, for whom he has made by his own calculation, about 30 videos and several concert films.
Tim has now written about his fascinating (and often hilarious) adventures making pop videos in the 80s, 90s and beyond (plus a nightmarish brush in Hollywood with Harvey Weinstein making The Crow 2) in his brilliant memoir I Shoot Rock Stars, published in August and now a Sunday Times bestseller.
And on Wednesday November 18th, the man who The Cure’s Robert Smith has described as “a true original, a genuine maverick” is coming to The PCC in central London to tell some stories from the book and more, in conversation with MVPS host David Knight.
Tim will also present a fantastic selection of his greatest music videos on the big screen. There will be some classics, there will be surprises. Will there be room for his notorious video for Soft Cell’s Sex Dwarf? You will have to come and find out. What is certain is that this meeting of Music Video Preservation Society is going to be awesome.
