Promonews - 17th Nov 2021

The new episode of The Promonews Podcast: Talking Music Videos - our series of conversations with creatives in the music video industry, supported by Loop Talent - is out today, featuring hairstylist Regina Meessen.

Regina's recent work on hairstyling in music videos was recognised in the first ever Best Hair & Makeup In A Video award at the UKMVAs this year: she was nominated for her work on Anaiis's Chuu, featuring Topaz Jones, and she also worked on the team of Little Simz's Woman, also nominated for the award.

In the interview with Promonews's David Knight and Rob Ulitski, Regina talks about the dramatic career shift that brought her to London from the Netherlands, to achieve her dream to become a hairstylist on photo and film shoots.

Regina reveals what it took for her to become successful in her field, her particular strength working with Afro hair, and the typical pressures working on a music video - and occasionally having a near-telepathic understanding with makeup artists.

She also discusses the importance of research and preparation on jobs such as the UKMVA-nominated video for Anaiis and the photo shoot for Joy Crookes's album cover - and also being given carte blanche by director Kahlil Joseph on his longform video for Sampha.

Previous episodes of the second series, made in association with Loop Talent, have featured director Sophia Ray and producer Mayling Wong, DoP Rik Burnell, director Kasper Haggstrom, and director/photographer Olivia Rose - all available to listen on Spotify, Apple, and other platforms.

The first series of The Promonews Podcast featured directors Lucrecia Taormina, Salomon Ligthelm, RUFFMERCY and Louis Bhose; Lee Fairweather, directors rep at COMPULSORY; and DoP Adam Singodia and colourist Vlad Barin.
