Colin Read signs to Pulse Films

Promonews - 4th May 2020

Pulse Films have announced the signing of director Colin Read to its music video roster, with Read opening his account at Pulse with the auspicious but unconventional video for Glass Animals' new release Dreamland: a 'flat-pack' music video, created in conditions of lockdown.

Coming from a narrative fiction background, Read obtained his MFA in creative writing at New York University, before jumping fully into the world of filmmaking, initially through his involvement with skate brands, and the skateboarding feature Spirit Quest (2016). He has gone on to direct shortform work for Radiohead, Battles, Danny Brown, Converse, Viceland, and more. His most recently acclaimed music video is for Mild Minds' Walls.

“Pulse Films is home to a number of directors that I admire both professionally and personally," says Read. "That, combined with the company’s ambitions for innovative storytelling, makes it feel like a perfect fit for me, and an exciting family to be joining. I’m proud to launch with Dreamland, which is a testament to what I hope we can continue to achieve together – hopefully with a little less social distancing!"

Produced just days after the UK went into lockdown, Read devised his 'flat=pack' music video, where all the elements of the video, including camera and lighting, were delivered to the home of Glass Animals' frontman Dave Bayley. Through a detailed 40-page master instruction book and accompanying photo glossary, Bayley was able to build and dress the set, lay a dolly track as well as set-up the cameras and rig the lighting.

The stunning and technically complex film offers little insight into the challenges of the shoot – that is until the final frames when the true complexity is unveiled in the behind-the-scenes footage.

“Colin is an undeniable creative force with unparalleled ambition and determination," says Rik Green, head of music videos at Pulse. "His ability to create such a stunning and complex piece of work during this unprecedented period of uncertainty and isolation is nothing short of remarkable. We are delighted that he is part of our roster and we look forward to what new challenges we can overcome!”
