An interactive music video has been announced as the winner of a challenge set by the group Hurts to students at Central St Martins, the prestigious London-based art school.

The competition was a collaboration between Sony Music, Central St Martins and BUG – and as well as winning a cash prize, the video by CSM students Virgil Ferragut and Sabba Keynejad for Hurts’ The Road (above) was screened at BUG 36 – The Directors Cut in March 2013.

Under a heading of ‘Look To The Future’, Theo and Adam from Hurts challenged students to come up with something completely new in music video, offering them four different tracks from their new album Exile, ahead of its release. Over 100 students entered the competition, working in teams, and 30 videos were put into production.

At the beginning of March a judging panel shortlisted the videos down to six finalists and those teams were invited to Sony Music’s Kensington offices, where the winner was announced by Theo Hutchcraft from Hurts. The judging panel comprised Theo and Adam from Hurts, BUG creative directors Phil Tidy and David Knight, Sony Music’s head of video Mike O’Keefe, Hurts’ Marketing Manager Nathalie Barnett, and Esteban Gitton of Central Saint Martins.

The winning video for the track The Road, produced by Virgil Ferragut and Sabba Keynejad can be viewed at (the video being best viewed on a Chrome browser: to toggle between viewing perspectives, just tap the space bar).

Mike O’Keefe, Head Of Video Sony Music, says: “Setting a challenge like this to the next generation of filmmakers really appealed to us. For Virgil and Sabba to get the opportunity to showcase their work to BUG’s well connected and film-obsessed audience makes this a truly unique opportunity for them. We want to thank Adam and Theo from Hurts who share our interest in helping new young filmmakers and for also lending us music from their album ahead of its release.”
