Fontaines D.C. reveal another track from their upcoming album Dopamine Chamber, via a discombulating encounter with the band by John Angus Stewart - filmed in New York City, on a bus crossing from Brooklyn to Manhattan. The video for Tongue is as lo-fi as the previous one, for Marianne, was super-stylised. But the effect of bringing us into the Fontaines world is consistent with that and their other videos. It's slightly unnerving, with singer blue-tinged Griann's face in close-up for much of the video, bar the occasional swerve to the other band members with the Manhattan skyline beyond. As it says on the end credits, it was filmed by the band themselves - and that does not come as a surprise. It's also shot on some basic, possibly old, equipment. But under John Angus Stewart's supervision the blurriness is a device to give the band back their edge.

Douglas Reddan directs a bouncy, dance-filled promo in a single take for sax player turned soul/pop singer Charlie Jeer. The video for Jennifer unfolds in a mid-century home, echoing 70s fashion and furnishings, and the camera follows Charlie and a trio of male dancers who turn it into the setting for a mini-musical. This looks great - with a Steadicam camera move that's as carefully choreographed as the dancers'. And ultimately an impressive showcase for Charlie Jeer as an emerging talent.

Tobi Omola and Ja’lisa Arnold direct a feverish pand feelgood romo for LA-based indie-pop trio Fortuno. The video for Alive channels the chaotic energy of noughties pop-punk music videos, with the band performing to a crowd of seven from their garage with the conviction of an arena show.Interspersed with fisheye dance numbers, kooky fashion and hand-drawn animation, it takes the concept of garage band-practice and amps it up to a hundred.Loads of energy, splendid cinematography by Edson Reyes (and a grade by Beau Leon) this video is really great fun - and you get a great sense of Fortuno. Hopefully playing near you very soon, to a crowd larger than seven.

Ryan Doubiago has directed an enthralling three-part short film to accompany new tracks from DJ and producer BICEP, documenting the emerging UK 'Free Party' scene. For Air, Lemonder and Viper, Doubiago brings his signature visual authenticity to capturing both the raw energy and resilience of a movement that has its roots in the rave and sound system culture of the late 20th century, and is now facing increasing regulatory pressure in the UK and across Europe. Filmed across a single 24-hour period in the English countryside, the trilogy follows two real UK-based crews from setup to sunrise. The centrepiece is the video for Viper, BICEP's track featuring Saskia, which is focussed on the peak of a Free Party event. It features brilliant use of camerawork to capture the movement and motion, and energy of the revellers - including a custom-made bullet-time rig.The other videos both employ a combination of still photography and ambient visuals to document the times before and after the peak of the event: Lemonder focusses upon the early planning, logistics, and grassroots organisation required to build an unlicensed party; Air documents the closing hours, capturing the dawn wind-down.Ryan Doubiago’s collaboration with BICEP builds on a strong body of work rooted in subculture and film craft. After acclaimed collaborations with artists like M83 and Bas, his recent film for J. Cole, The Fall Off Is Inevitable, picked up Gold at Kinsale Sharks, Silver at 1.4, and Best Cinematography at Berlin Commercial."Club culture is being pushed further to the margins," says Doubiago. "Amid the recent resurgence of the free party movement, and the subsequent police response, we partnered with a young collective to document their process, asking them to explain their ethos, and the obstacles shaping the scene today."Callum Harrison, EP and Head of Special Projects at CANADA adds: "It was an absolute dream to team up with legends Bicep and Ninja Tune. Thanks to their trust, Ryan’s music videos stand as striking, authentic celebration of electronic music and Free Party culture.”

One of the best pop video directing teams of the early 2000s will be showcased at the next meeting of Music Video Preservation Society at The Mildmay Club next week. Blue Source, the directing duo comprised of Rob Leggatt and Leigh Marling, will be the special guests at the show taking place on Friday, October 9th in the unique surroundings of the Mildmay Club's main hall, talking to MVPS host David Knight about their incredible hot streak of music video artistry that resulted in brilliant work for the likes of of Fatboy Slim, Dirty Vegas, Spiritualised, Avalanches and New Order.Leggatt and Marling emerged as directors having previously been graphic designers, specialising in record and CD sleeves, winning numerous awards for their work in the process. The pair branched out into directing pop promos at the start of the Noughties, with similar success. And their work was very much focussed on narrative over conventional performance, with leftfield storytelling and memorable characters being at heart of videos that brought a new dimension to some of the best tunes of the era. The Autumn meeting of MVPS at the Mildmay Club on October 9th will also include a look back to some of the iconic videos that were rocking our world 30 years ago in 1996, plus some of the best videos that have come out in 2026 - and possibly nominated at this year's UKMVAs. There will be a special report on the War Child album HELP 2 and accompanying visual content and videos, creative directed by Jonathan Glazer; plus a look at the 1981 Madness movie Take It Or Leave It, now restored to its full glory. Some tickets are still available for the Autumn meeting of Music Video Preservation Society with Blue Source, here. Then a week later, on Friday October 16th, MVPS heads to Newcastle for a night dedicated to artists nominated for the 2026 Mercury Prize, being held this year in Newcastle. Tickets on sale for that show at The Tyneside Cinema website. • Music Video Preservation Society, October 9th at The Mildmay Club - book here.
