Nathan James Tettey reunites with Headie One to direct a cinematic promo for viral track Martin's Sofa. The director leans into the themes of the track, which pay tribute to a friend who helped the artist right at the start of his career. A montage of vignettes play out across the four-minute runtime, ranging from dreamlike, vibrant set pieces to exterior performance sections, all tied together with a sense of community and friendship. And having just signed to Knucklehead for global representation, it's a great way for Tettey to start a new chapter in his career. "Making Martin's Sofa was the most out of body experience I’ve endured in a while but I loved every second of it and to see the response from Headie’s fans has been incredible to witness because really making this video was for them as well as for Headie and Martin," Tettey has said."Martin's actual sofa is real and was used in the video but the sentiment of what Headie is talking about is also real as well and for me was perfectly illustrated in the process all of us went through trying to bring his vision to life. Getting up each day at the crack of dawn and working into the deep of night to try and solve as many problems and tick as many boxes as is humanly possible before getting back up to do it all again the next day."I just want to thank every member of the immediate team... British singer and producer Wesley Joseph self-directs the mesmerising video for his track Patience, with featured artist Jorja Smith as his co-star - in his first outing since signing to the directing roster at Stink Rising.As with his excellent self-directed videos for Thrilla and Ultramarine, Joseph creates a visually striking world with a dreamlike quality, comprising of apparently disconnected scenes - teenagers united in grief, two young boys happy on their bikes, an outburst of violence, and so on - which gain meaning when taken as a whole. Wesley and Jorja witness these hyperreal, humanist scenes as they drive through their hometown in a white vintage Mercedes. And while distracted by the visions they see, they are involved in a head-on collision.In the aftermath of the wreck, both artists perform in the carnage of the accident, and then into a metaphorical 'heaven-like' space. The dramatic subnarratives that they saw earlier outside the car come to an emotive conclusion at the end.Joseph performs from within an expanse of flowers as if he is visiting his own graveside, while Jorja Smith arrives as a presence in the video as the mortally injured victim, hurled away from the flaming car.The video, shot over two days in Surrey, is redolent of Kendrick Lamar's videos, particularly the video for Element, and the work of David Lynch. It's the latest and most substantial work yet from the Birmingham-born musician, producer and filmmaker, who originally came to London in 2016 to study film, and then began making music, and is now proving to be successful in both fields.Joseph now joins the Stink Rising roster, and will be globally represented by the new talent division of Stink Films, the production company with offices around the world. “I’m really excited to be joining forces with the visionaries at Stink Films," he says. Ali Kurr's new video for Rina Sawayama tackles a serious subject with verve, wit and lots of visual style - and it's her first video as a director at Darkroom, Partizan's content and music video division.The concept behind Sawayama's hard rock-pop banger STFU! derives from her own experiences, her inner angst about micro-insults and all too familiar stereotypes as a Japanese woman brought up in the West. The film begins with a dialogue - written by Sawayama and scriptwriter Isobel Rogers - between Rina and her frustratingly ignorant date, in an upmarket Japanese restaurant, who subjects her to casually offensive, insensitive and stereotypical comments about her race, while apparently thinking he is being thoughtful. Eventually, enough is enough. Rina's internal rage explodes, in surprising ways. Her noughties nu-metal is slickly visualized in empowered versions of the stereotypes discussed by her despicable date. Catharsis is achieved. The video for STFU!, Kurr's first at Darkroom, follows promos made for Loyle Carner, Poppy Ajudha and Connie Constance. This year she has also directed spots for BBC, Veet and British Vogue.
