Thomas James's second video for Gurriers is a folk horror tale with considerable atmosphere and creeping sense of dread - a terrific example of what the director does best. For the Irish band's powerful Nothing Happens Twice. James establishes his trademark, gothic-influenced visual style in Castleblaney, Ireland and surrounding countryside. The central narrative, with its focus on a vulnerable young woman (or is it women?) has a strong visual motif. It sustains the sense of uncanny and tension thorughout, which makes this ambitious video one of James's most successful works. It's all the more impressive for having been achieved with a small but very talented crew. And it allowed James the relative luxury to shoot across a few days - and nights - on location in Ireland.“We worked very closely with the lads from the band on this one, shooting in Pierce and Mark's hometown - turning it into a changeling, psycho fairy trip through grief and ritual," says James. "[This] obviously owes a lot to folk horror - something myself and the band spent a long time discussing and nerding out over. But we got to really delve into Irish folklore, looking at how mental health and grief had through the ages, been scapegoated upon fairies and an underworld replacing the afflicted - and I suppose how that might look now. "It was a pretty wild week living and shooting in Castleblayney. We had an absolutely minimal crew (there was four of us). But everyone in the town, and from the label and band, were so beautifully helpful, giving us locations, time, talent and performance. It was amazing to see."
