Ian Roderick Gray tackles body horror through a poignant lens, in his affecting promo for On Man. The concept for Survive This focus on John, a man who is ravaged by a gruesome mutation affecting much of his upper body. After waking to find it has grown drastically and painfully overnight, and believing it to be terminal, he decides to end his life and die on his own terms, much to the anger of his longtime partner. In the same vein as the previous collaboration between artist and director Worse Than It Seems - which saw a woman afflicted with an extra eye in her skin - Gray has a knack at tackling complex narratives and themes through body horror elements, and this is another project that knocks it out of the park. In a nutshell, the video is a powerfully moving and uncompromising depiction of assisted suicide, exploring themes of love, mercy, dignity and mortality.I felt a responsibility to create a visual that would do justice to the haunting music."When On Man approached me to direct the music video for his latest single, I knew that I wanted to try and create another hybrid between drama and music video, but in a more refined way than our last effort," says the director."When he first played me the song I was overwhelmed. It was so incredibly raw and powerful and genuinely emotionally evocative. I definitely felt a heavy responsibility to create a visual that would do justice to the haunting music and to some extent, the song dictated the approach of the video."We bounced around some ideas and after reading an article about a tragic number of illegally performed assisted suicides that had occurred in France amongst elderly couples, some of whom were living with terminal conditions, I pitched an idea that was inspired by one specific story - and also from my experience of living with an illness. As a Type 1 Diabetic, this was also an opportunity to explore what it is like to live with a condition and how the condition itself can often be more of a burden for the people around you than for yourself."Survive This is a deeply personal music video to both myself and On Man - who added his own ideas and we wrote the script together. It has become one of the most rewarding projects I’ve been involved with."

Thomas James directs a beautifully twisted and sublimely surreal exploration of inner demons coming to life, in his promo for Bring Me The Horizon's Strangers.In a nondescript industrial space, a host of characters undergo Cronenberg-style body horror transformations, intercut with a suitably haunting performance from the band. Bodies twist, contort and conjoin in a horrific yet eerily beautiful way, balancing a nightmarish aesthetic with hyper-intimate, bravura cinematography by Adam Barnett.James draws on a host of influences - including a special nod to Chris Cunningham and Aphex Twin's Rubber Johnny - but adds his own facility for narrative and sense of humanity to the outstanding VFX work. It's a brilliantly successful execution of a stunningly ambitious concept.

LOOSE reunites with IDLES, and also collaborates with animator Edie Lawrence to direct an eye-popping claymation epic for the piledriving Crawl. In classic claymation style, the fun is how the malleability of the form leads to a jawdropping, often grisly transformation. That is certainly the case here, as a claymation version of IDLES' vocalist Joe Talbot hits the road on his chopper motorbike, riding down a Route 66-style highway.It's not long before the transformation begins, as he ventures further into the unknown. The flesh is slowly being stripped away from his body...Exploring the lyrical themes of addiction and having to face your demons head-on, the video is a brilliant achievement. Not for the faint of heart, maybe, but it is IDLES after all. LOOSE and animator Edie Lawrence, supplemented by VFX wizard Jordan Chappell, echo the work of the real masters of the artform, and it's very good to see claymation having a moment once again.

Teenage lust turns gory in iconoclastic director Bryan M Ferguson's video for Alice Glass.An emo teen is holed up in her bedroom with her hot goth boyfriend watching TV when Alice Glass appears on screen, performing the abrasive Love Is Violence - which prompts them to embark on a passionate clinch, which has its dark side. In fact, its literally gut-wrenching.This is a skilfully-made comic body horror made with real panache - a hallmark of Ferguson's work, such as last year's video for Arab Strap's Here Comes Comus!

Lucrecia Taormina laments consumerism and shopping fever, in the darkly comedic promo for Steven Wilson's Personal Shopper. In a sleek shopping mall, we are introduced to a man who has just received a huge wad of fifty pound notes. Ready to shop until he drops - quite literally - he visits different shops and counters, swapping parts of his body for bling and new things. As the shopper exchanges increasingly important parts of himself, from fingers to eyes to lips, the concept only gets more absurd and out of control, with Taormina's flair for the unusual remaining utterly engaging throughout. There's a terrific performance by Robert Lane as the deluded consumer, while DoP Pieter Snyman creates a hyperreal aesthetic through soft beauty lighting and clinical colour palettes of white and shiny metal. If Apple did body horror adverts, this is what they would look like. Fascinating work.
