The Strokes 'Going Shopping' by Johann Rashid
David Knight - 3rd July 2026
A madcap, Easter egg-filled video for The Strokes' returning single from director and multi-disciplinary artist Johann Rashid, aka Promiseland, featuring White Lotus actor Walton Goggins who assumes vocal duties from the band's nonplussed-looking frontman Julian Casablancas.
In fact, Rashid's video for Going Shopping begins like a retread of Paul Simon's You Can Call My Al video starring Chevy Chase, but that's just for starters.
Rashid manages the trick of presenting the band in a quickfire series of inane scenarios - well, that's happened before in their videos for sure - in an intriguing location, and being pointedly political at the same time.
I wouldn't be surprised if Rashid and Casablancas are fans of The Monkees TV show from the 60s. This has a similarly goofy yet satirical spirit to the music interludes directed by Bob Rafelson and others in that show - which were themselves heavily influenced by Richard Lester's Beatles movie Help!Â
The Strokes have made some very good videos in their long career - this is well up there.
