Baxter Dury 'Schadenfreude' by Gareth Bowen
Rob Ulitski - 7th Aug 2025
Gareth Bowen directs a pulsating and surreal promo for Baxter Dury.
The video for Schadenfreude follows a nameless stranger chasing after a twenty pound note - tied to the back of a car, always just out of reach - in a warped and completely singular narrative.
Whilst the man gives chase, Baxter Dury performs inside the car, relishing in the stranger's misfortune and desperation. With coruscating spotlights and a grungy, burnt orange aesthetic, it's an absorbing, darkly comic promo that moves at a breathless pace.
“I loved the tune," Bowen explains. "It instantly felt really cinematic - like something straight out of a pulp ‘80s or ‘90s movie the first time I heard it.
"I did have to Google what schadenfreude meant. But the meaning - people being weirdly thrilled when things go wrong for someone else - spoke to me. It also felt perfect for building a twisted little narrative that’s atmospheric, joyful, comedic and spooky too.”
