Trout 'over + out' by Ben Hardy

Ben Hardy has created an intriguing experimental visual for Brighton-based singer-songwriter Trout, mixing live action and stop motion, placing the artist in the midst of water plant life and adding further layers to visceral effect.
The song, in the intimate and confessional vein of Elliot Smith, was written following a move from Liverpool to the South Coast, capturing the helpless ache of trying to help someone who can't be rescued. "Feeling helpless when someone else has given up or has ‘tapped out’ of or removed themselves from a situation, and not knowing how to move forward from this," says Trout. The video reflects these themes with its sense of entanglement and claustrophobia.
"This film is a crunchy water collage machine and it's eating itself," explains Hardy, rather enigmatically of his collaboration with Trout. "Principal photography took place largely at home in Brighton. Resources were poured into having the time to experiment. Stealthy missions to fishing lakes to collect a variety of pond weeds to dress the set and a not quite edible gravy/chocolate mix to sing through; this was a pure DIY experience.
"Textural elements were captured following, and some one month later in Yosemite when on a road-trip in the US."
