Waldskin 'The Shore' by Sarah Jacquier
Rob Ulitski - 15th Apr 2021
Sarah Jacquier directs a darkly symbolic promo for Waldskin's The Shore.
"This story is about how humans have enslaved themselves to the system they created." Jacquier notes. "Trying to escape or being part of it feels like two sides of the same coin."
Exploring an abstract narrative - packed with powerful imagery and iconography - the videos moves at a breakneck pace, entangling various myths and backstories to create a transcendent whole.
"The idea originates from the reinterpretation of the Greek myth of Sisyphus’s punishment and Orpheus’s journey to the underworld. The video shows the absurdity of working for a system that feels like a never-ending meaningless loop, and how the attempts to escape it can get us to turn to our darker more animal self."
The concept can no doubt be interpreted in a variety of ways, and that is the magic of this type of promo. It's an impressive feat, spanning choreography, car chases, animal setups and custom prop work, and shows a flair for surrealism and contemporising traditional stories and structures.
