Biig Piig 'Cuenta Lo' by Nono Ayuso & Rodrigo Inada
Promonews - 16th Mar 2021
Biig Piig pays tribute to her Spanish roots in Cuenta Lo, and harks back to a previous career in the accompanying video, directed by Nono Ayuso and Rodrigo Inada, as she deals the cards in a hallucinatory poker game.
The singer-songwriter - aka Jessica Smyth - has described Cuenta Lo as “an alter-ego-driven song about money, sex and power", adding that the video "is based around when I used to be a poker dealer, and it’s about the coldness and greediness that money can bring in all industries…including music.”
In the video, a detached Jess deals, while amid the cocktails and the poker chips, the players around her become increasingly excitable. Then things get weird, as Ayuso and Inada trigger a vivid shift into horror territory, with most of the cast replaced by shadowy beings with glowing eyes. The result is a meticulously rendered cautionary tale, anchored by Smyth's wordly delivery.
Nono Ayuso, who has now signed to Darkroom, Partizan's division for up-and-coming talent, says "This was such a beautiful trip. Biig Piig is an amazing artist with a really cool career ahead of her and it was really nice working with her and [commissioner] Kat Cattaneo on the development of this music promo. They allowed and supported us to create this dark and magical universe. It was a dream job!"
