Lil Wayne ft Takeoff ‘I Don’t Sleep’ by James Larese
Cristina Conde Tkatchenko - 24th June 2020
For the video for I Don’t Sleep (from his album Funeral) Lil Wayne takes advantage of music video production in quarantine by turning to the animators.
This quirky acid trip by James Larese stays true to the rap genre with some key visuals: the fast cars, drugs, female backing dancers, and large wads of cash. But Larese also uses the animation in an ingenious way to feature Lil Wayne and guest artist Takeoff in their various stylised forms.
The bright, bold colours produce a visually stimulating video, while the animation loops to mirror the chorus and at brief moments, the lyrics appear on screen too. It's a trippy experience combining different styles of animation, balancing between comic and pop art style, to give a 90’s cartoon feeling.
In addition, the glitchy VHS layer - interspersed with some real-life skating tricks, filmed with a fish-eye lens - all contribute to a quirky visual when pieced together.
