The Insomniax 'How Does Your Garden Grow' by Johny Mourgue
Johny Mourgue mixes gritty drama with impressionistic performance in the short film to accompany south London hip-hop duo The Insomniax's How Does Your Garden Grow.
The main protagonist, played by Juel Vas, appears to be seeking escape from the everyday when he does an illicit deal in a car on a wintry night in London. The setting moves to the Paris suburbs, where The Insomniax perform the track.
But the change in environment is more of a reflective space for a song that is a critique of a decade of life under Tory leadership. And ultimately the film returns to the reality of existence in London, revealing Vas's earlier motivations: he is caring for his infirm, invalid father, and wants to alleviate his suffering.
This thought-provoking film for the duo is Mourgue's second collaboration with The Insomniax after working with them on their Love She Wants project, with the accompanying short film featuring a cameo from Roots Manuva that premiered on Channel 4's Random Acts series.
