Olivia Dean 'Crosswords' by Fiona Jane Burgess
Rob Ulitski - 13th Mar 2020
Olivia Dean laments the infatuation we have with bad relationships in Fiona Jane Burgess's stripped back video for Crosswords.
Lounging around the house in a series of different rooms and positions, Dean's understated performance is paired with cosy art direction, to express her contentment with being alone. Warm pastel colours fill the frame, interspersed with conceptual shots of fish and oranges floating in a bathtub.
The song explores the idea of being madly in love with someone and placing them on a pedestal, yet the video takes the angle of a more mature Dean looking back on a time in her life, which is a brilliant perspective.
The soft, natural lighting creates a wistful vibe that runs through the visual, and Matthew Emvin Taylor's use of slow zooms and considered composition elevates the aesthetic.
The use of subtle VFX adds another layer to the setups, exploring the dichotomy of love vs loneliness through shadow and altered perspectives, the final polish to a poignant and impressive promo.
