Liam Gallagher 'Once' by Charlie Lightening
In one of the more surprising team-ups in recent pop video history, avid Man City fan Liam Gallagher shares the screen with Man United legend Eric Cantona in Charlie Lightening’s rather brilliant video for Once.
In fact, Liam hands performing duties to Eric, and himself takes a surprisingly deferential role. But that turns out to be a genius move, possibly his coolest and most confident move in years.
Gallagher plays the side man here - butler and chauffeur - as Cantona is a wonderfully -realised version of the King Eric who bestrode English football like a colossus in the Nineties. He's older, and very fond of the red wine, but still very much in regal shape as he swans through his huge, ostentatiously rock n roll white manor house, lipsyncing the lyrics of Once.
This is a great part for Cantona, and his skill and aplomb is made more apparent by the fact its captured in one single Steadicam shot - or is it a drone? On that side of things, it's not unfair to say that there is a bit of 1917-style ingenuity going on here, courtesy of DoP Daniel Lightening, and Steadicam operator Matt Allsop. Superb.
