Soumik Datta 'Jangal' by Souvid Datta
Rob Ulitski - 28th Nov 2019
Photographer and filmmaker Souvid Datta weaves an intergenerational tale of friendship with a cri de coeur about the global climate crisis in his video for his brother and sarod-playing virtuoso Soumik Datta.
This is the story of two boys in rural India who witness the first steps to deforestation by fire - the process that has accelerated this year with the Amazon fires.
In a parallel, present-day storyline, Soumik Datta lives a busy life in London, struggling to find inspiration in his composition of music. But then past and present come together, and Souvid finds his inspiration, to write Jangal.
Says Soumik: "It’s time we become aware of our complicity in the ongoing climate crisis and mass destruction of trees. It’s time to preserve existing forest ecosystems and restore lost tree cover. It’s time to #SavetheJangal." And Souvid Datta's video is a poignant and reflective way to bring the music and the message to the public - a timely and important piece of work.
